Telescopic column? Come on in....

Ok, really dumb question but how is the telescopic function controlled? Such as with the tilt control etc. I can't get anything other than tilt but I see 2 areas where it appears it could telescope.

Case in point from an 85 Caddy Eldorado:

OK, I'll try to do this without pictures, as I CANT figure out how to post pics anyway, the shaft the steering wheel ataches too has a threaded hole in the center of it and a shaft in the bottom of it that pushes on a tapered key that pushes out against the tube that the splined shaft goes up and down in.

In short if youve got the steering wheel off of it, you should be able to pull up and down on the splined shaft. Some of the columns had 1/4-20 threaded hole in the center of this shaft, and some had 5/16-18 threads. When you tighten up the bolt, it pushes out on that wedge and holds that splined shaft in place. I used a '78 Trans Am steering wheel on mine, with the hub from the TA. I had a heck of a time making the horn work and the telescopic part too. I made the horn button turn the bolt for the telescopic part.

In the Cadi, it had a notch in the back of the steering wheel, and had a lever that came through that and you moved it left or right to tighten up the wedge to hold the steering wheel at whatever distance you wanted it to be. There are aftermarket steering wheels for Cadi columns, or you could use a Vette steering wheel, alot of them had telescopic wheels too.

Hope this helps!

Yup, Terry nailed it.

I have a tilt & telescoping in my 49 from a 72 Caddy. Its not very practical in my truck as the column is a bit too long to start with so Ikeep the telescoping part all the way in.

Hey Bobby, I'm glad you're back!! I know how that is, the '79 column in my 56 is also too long, and I have to keep it turned all the way down plus I have a '79 Trans Am steering wheel with the original hub and it's about 3 1/2" longer too! The steering wheel is kind up in your face while driving!

Catch ya later!
