I would start with replacing the plugs. I changed mine out at 96K and the gaps were more than double what they should have been.
I replaced mine already, but not the wires, I'm thinking to replace the spark plug wires they are the original Ford parts with 78k miles, they look OK, do I need to change them?

It would not hurt. Mine looked ok but one of them actually broke as I was pulling it off one plug. Seemed to have melted a bit. Good luck!
A known trouble spot with the 3.0 is the camshaft position sensor. It may need cleaning or replacing.
Also, your O2 sensors may be loose, or need replacing. Either of those issues could contribute to pinging.
FWIW I believe the criteria for replacing the chain and gears is 6 degrees of rotation on the timing indicator from TDC before the #5 cylinder exhaust valve pushrod moves. In essence, you'd have to have the whole thing exposed to test it, and have a dial indicator on the pushrod; if you're that far, might as well replace it.
I priced out the parts for mine the other day, and it was less than $100.
That said, unless your engine has been driven very very hard, hydrolocked at some point or generally abused, it shouldn't be stretched at your mileage.
