I have a problem w/ my truck generating to much heat. It is a 91 f-150 w/ 302 and 4 wd. It also loses anti freeze but it isn't in the oil or oil in the anti-freeze and it isn't in the exhaust or on the ground. With that heat comes pinging.
My mechanic has replaced at different times the thermostat
(3 times), the knock sensor, the wires and make sure they aren't touching, the EGR valve, put in cooler plugs, new timing chain and sprockets (thought they might have skipped a tooth), The coolant temp. switch that sends a signal to the ECM. The radiator is good.
Teamviper, Timing can make the truck run hot if it is off. You may need to re-check the chain if you feel they skipped a tooth. Did you check the fan clutch? It may not allow the fan to turn hard enough thus letting the engine run hot. How about the overflow tank? Is it functioning properly? Do you notice any air bubbles in the tank when the truck is running or after you shut it down? Just a couple of possibilities. Good luck.
I agree with Jake. I fought overheating on my new 351W for a year until my magnetic pickup on the distributor (new distributor) went out (leaving me stranded). I replaced the distributor and I immediately found that I could run more advance with no pinging and my overheating disappeared altogether!!!
I had my mechanic replaced the timing gears and chain when he said maybe it skipped a tooth because the truck has 150k miles on it, I figured it couldn't hurt. I will have him look at the fan clutch. thanks
