1978 F100 Options, etc.

Hi all-

I just inherited a 78 F100 (I think its a 78... either way- its a V8, auto) from my late grandfather, and I have a couple questions. I am currently about 200 miles away from it, so I can't go and look at it- However, I know it is in great shape with about 60,000 original miles on it.

My first question is what engine choices were available for this truck? I thought it might have a 302, but my Dad says that he thinks its a 360. My reading tells me the 360 was done a couple years earlier, however, I am not completely sure on model year either, just going by memory and looking at others pictures. Is one engine better than the other?

Also, I have never owned a Ford before, but have been wrenching on stuff my whole live, and make a living while going to school doing so. What are the weaknesses of these engines? Where do these engines perform well, and are there any big drawbacks in design?

I have been to Oldsmobiles most of my life, and that community has a faq page compiled... is there something like that here?

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place, or posted too many questions... My mind is running wild with possibilities for my new project-

Thanks in advance for any help y'all can provide-

Regards,
Andy

Welcome to FTE

360/390 = 1968/76 only.

1977/79 F100/350 engine availability (4th digit in VIN is the engine code):

300 I-6 (B) / 302 (G) / 351M (H) / 400 (S) / 460 (A or J)

FTE has VIN decoders, as does Mil1ion...the FTE "guru" on 1973/79 F100/350's.

If you're looking for assistance or info, you've found the BEST site on the internet!

I'm a big Olds fan myself, I've owned around 20 since 1960.

Hi again all,

Still haven't gone back to get the truck, but I did get the VIN from my Dad over the phone. Using the AWESOME resources this site has, I now know the following.

I have a 1978 F-100, With a 302 2V and an automatic. I assume it will be a C6?

Either way, I know the 302 is a good engine, and that this truck is in great shape. I look forward to begin making it a little bit my own, while paying homage to my grandfather, who I know would encourage any performance modifications.

I'll be posting more as I get into things!

Thanks, and regards,
Andy

More than likely a C4 behind a 302.
