I have a 1979 f-150 with a 302 and factory ac. it has an edelbrok torker II intake on it. I want to convert to a hei dizy setup but dont know if it will clear the intake or the AC compressor? has anyone ever done a conversion like this?
I never have.... just wondering why you would not run a Duraspark setup? I have one in my truck with the small cap, works great, all the way to 7000rpms
i have been having gremlins in the cold weather figured this would both replace the ignition system and cap rotor all the dizy bushings you know a full replacement ignition system so far all the parts including dizy have run me just over 109 dollars

Our DUI(HEI) measures 9 1/2" from where it rests on the block to the very top of the DUI cap. The cap measures 5 1/4" in diameter. Should fit unless you are running a high-rise intake.
If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:
Stay away from the HEI units the modules are getting harder to find and most won't fit with AC. Go with a Duraspark. I would buy a MSD unit if it where me but not every one wants to spend the money. check on ebay for a good used set up.You will not be unhappy. Ron
I dont think there will be any issue finding replacement parts. these units are using all readily available gm parts and if I know Gm owners, They are very stubborn, set in there ways, and will have access to these parts for a long time.
Ok guys The distributer is in, it barely cleared the heater bypass and the carb. The Idle seems stronger and cold starts are alot easier. the only thing that could have made the swap better was to have had the power feed plug and the tach plug. I think they should have come with the dizy.
mind if i throw a little sour milk in the fire? i have the perf dist dui in my 89 with a 351, it also has an eddy performer and a thermoquad carb. that distributor was one of the best investments i have ever made!!!!!!!!! the truck starts as reliably as anything , in fact it doesnt turn a full revolution before it pops off. the air cleaner is a bummer, i still dont have the proper set up. i have a 14" that just rests on the top of the dizzy, mind you it has a 1 inch air cleaner spacer, and 1 inch carb spacer. man does this truck run, it is snappy, no ignition hiccups, nothing. perf dist. was awesome to deal with and lived up to all expectations!!!! We include them with ours. Call us if they were omitted.
ok road test left lots to be desired its still stalling for no reason that I can see. sure it is a few degrees retarded but that shouldnt make it stall like it is. it seems fine when its first started runs great down the road but the first stop sign I hit not even 2 miles down the road its stalling I have to two foot it to keep it running. I dont drive with my feet. I am disabled and only have the use of my right leg but its to short to reach comfortably. the temp gauge is usually somewhere between cold and maybe 130 it will continue to cause trouble untill it reaches 190 there it will stay running but feels like there is either too much or to little fuel getting to the engine because there is a slight hesitation. but it runs fine just not directly off idle or cold I have 4300 motorcraft 4bbl siting on top of an edelbroke torker II. I didnt acutual buy the disz from performance distributers I have the cheaper wysco model. brand new jegs 8mm plug wires bosch platinum plug that have been in there since the motor swap back in early 2005 but I havent hardly put any mile on them. I dont know if this means anything but back 2006 I changed the coil to a late model 1980's tfi coil and re-gapped the plugs to .65 i think at that time they were fairly clean no carbon deposits a nice brown color. I had to pull the number one out when I put the dizy in (slipped when installing the dizy) but it was black and had carbon deposits on it. Is that a sign of a rich mixture?
somebody help!!!! the junkyard is sounding quite tempting
