Well I just finnished painting the truck over Thanksgiving and was planning on pulling the engine over Christmas But. On the way down the interstate (65 mph @ 4000 rpm) it started loosing power. I pulled to the side of the road and it sounded like a left side exhaust manifold donut leak. I could get it to start at a low idle. It would sputter and die if I tried to give it gas. After a $200 tow bill ( a freind no less) I have done a compression test (cold, won't run) and cylinders runs from 130 to 170 and the spread is averaged between the cylinders. I sprayed the base of the carb with starting fluid while it tried to start and that produced no change. I am running a MSD 6 on the engine. ANY SUGGESTIONS? I did say what the heck and have stated the task of pulling the engine but am a little concerned to rebuild and still have a problem.
Have you verified good fuel supply, healthy spark, timing chain in time, plugged exhuast. Keep on lookin, eliminate components, and you will find the problem. Keep us posted!

I have verified fuel through carb, it is sparking because it will run at idle, but does make a noise like a exhaust manifold donut leak. How would I check for quality of spark? Are timing gear/chain problems common?
I do run 4000rpm at 65mph with the 460 to C6 to a 410 rear. I need the power to pull all those gas pumps (8 mpg empty - 6.3 with the trailer).
