I was just reading a site that sold port plates and I was wondering if they are all that they make them out to be? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
I know the port plates help out with the poopy 351C 4bbl heads by re-shaping the exhuast port, but I don't see the use of them in a 385 series engine. The 385 series heads require a totally different style of head work than the 351C.

They're generally used in conjunction with full porting on all-out race car heads. Most mudders and drag people who go to the trouble of installing them are rather secretive about publishing flow numbers, but they do get raves from users.
For a street or mild performance engine, I doubt it would be worth the cost and effort. The intended use is to provide enough flow to support very long duration and very high lift cams, not exactly streetable.
