Best underbody coating
So, I'm just gonna ask you guys. What do you think is the best stuff to use to protect against rust? I am puttin a new bed on my 79 250 and I want to put something on the bottom of it to keep it from rusting out on me like my current bed did. The bed is pretty solid except for a few spots I can fix, so I want to do this right(and only once). Good beds are like gold out here so they are tough to come by. The truck sees alot of mud and dirt so I need something pretty tough. I was looking at POR-15, Rust Bullit, or the Eastwood stuff, but of course they all claim to be the best. Does anyone have any experience with any of them? Has anyone had any of them on their truck for any length of time?
Thanks.
You can also replace 'metal ready" with Ospho which can be bought at ACE etc for much cheaper. The por 15 is zink phosphate which is likely a bit better but ospho converts the rust just the same.
Stay away from rustoleum and other products that are similar if you want the job to be done forever. Many sing praise for such products and if all prep work is excellent and you don't have chemicals onthe road or gravel etc then it could be just fine... but there is a marked difference in quality of product and i'll be redoing my ma in laws car which was treated using converter and rustoleum and nicks lead to rust in lower body panels.
I like por 15 and have to try eastwood...i should though. I'm treating the frame and underbody of my '72 torino right now and that tar crap is a real pain... lets the rust start butyou cant get to it very easy. Also...POR 15 with fiber cloth makes a great patch panel.
