I do not totally agree with that. If you read the following Ford SSM, it would appear that using oil of a correct weight for the temps is more important than having oil with the CJ-4 certification.
6.4 PowerStroke cold weather starting procedure/recommendations:
With the new high pressure fuel system, the 6.4 PowerStroke starts at much lower temperatures than previous engine modles. To ensure proper bearing lubrication in ambient temperures below -10 degress it is imperative that the engine block heater be used. It is recommended the block heater be powered three hours prior to starting. In addition, it is recommened that a light oil such as 0W-40 or 0W-30 beused. Ensure the API rating of the oil is CJ-4. SSM 19603. CI-4 Plus is permitted if CJ-4 is not available, but severe duty oil change intervals must be followed.
again it was my understanding the new spec, CJ-4 was due to emissions issues, not injectors or bearings. i know soot loading was a concern so maybe a shorter OCI is ok the older specs. i thought DPF contamination was another but maybe in wrong.
it may be ford has backpedaled because no oils thinner than 15W40 where available in CJ-4 at the time and they wanted peeps to have cold weather protection.
any CI-4+ spec oil in 5W-40 or 0W-40 will work for my man if FORD says its OK.

i have had 3 turbo psds , 1 of each type and have never changed the oil until at least 25,000 miles and have always had clean oil annalisis tests. idont believe engines have changed one bit in the last 50 years except they are better every year. life is up and reliability is vastlly improved. if my new 6.4 is so sensitive to oil, my God,,i guess it will blow up and my exhust will turn into a bomb because i use synthetic oil? i dont think so. same with block heaters, the engine starts fine without it, so i dont use it.

you are right .......they have not changed ?????????
the sec for the 4 rating is the amount of ash, sulpher and phosphorus, all of which can harm the recombiner or what ever it is. since there is none of this in the rottela t synthetic, and the phospherous is at 1/2 the allowed limit, no damage. the phosph is needed to protect metal to metal contact. it get kind of risky using this oil in a flat tappet cam engine. since these are omly seen in old pre 60s cars and some earlier bmw bikes, and there areadditive packages availible from torco oil , it dosent concern us. my diesel jett has a flat tappet cam, so i use the torco additivewith the rottela t synthetic.

either you run a bypass or your FOS.
just because one can do something does not mean it is even close to the best thing to do.
let me put it this way. there is no proof and prolly never will be of changing your oil at XXXX miles ever made an engine fail sooner or last longer. thats why we have common sence. too bad GOD gave some of us more than others.
