is the 4 spd tranny in an 85 f250 2wd different than a 4x4 tranny. what kind of front suspension is in an 85 4x4. are the oil pans different in 4x4 model 6.9's. i am wanting a 4x4 of some sort and trying to trade my 85 f250 for one but no luck. nobody wants these trucks.
or swap to 4x4 on this but i think that is going to be too much
It shouldn't be all that bad considering you already have annother ford of the same era to use as a guide when fitting things in. Personally, I think putting in leaf springs in would be easier than coil springs. The only thing stopping be from going to 4wd are my 3.08 gears, I already have the transfer case. Unfortunately, front differentials only go as far as 3.54 in the fords, so I'm stuck for now.
Remember how hard it can be to get a 4wd ford of this era in good shape.
i know somebody that has a sister which owns a junker 87-92 f250 4x4 which is trash. if he can get in touch with them, i am wanting to get the whole truck. but i think those are IFS suspension. it is also an auto tranny i believe and mine is a manual so if the transfer case is connected to the transmission, i may still have a problem with that part.
The 4x4 IFS suspension is still leaf springs.
A monobeam like a Dana 60 will bolt right up to the same springs.
With air tools and a helper, swapping from IFS to monobeam is an afternoon job.
Knock the tie rod loose from the steering sector, remove the calipers from the brake rotors, remove 4 U bolts that hold the axle to the springs, drop the driveshaft, and I can't remember 4 or 6 bolts out of the cross member.
The IFS is out.
4 bolts in the trac bar bracket, 4 U bolts over the springs, calipers back on the 60, hook up trac bar, attrach steering linkage and reinstall the drive shaft.
i recently conversted a crew cab 2 wheel drive to 4x4. i made the brackets for the swap. i used a highboy axle. they are expensive but my buddy has a junkyard full of 73-79 fords. it took some time but only costs were the axle and 3/8 steel plating.
what kind of transfer case did you use, i'm guessing something that is not a part of the transmission. what about a driveshaft, did you have to lengthen it.

I don't suppose you have some pictures of the conversion?
i can get you some pics. the truck was an auto when i started but swapped to a ZF 5 speed. as far as the t-case i took the tailshaft off the tranny and hook the t-case on. the rear driveshaft was originally a 2 piece with the carrier bearing. i removed that and got a one piece shaft made and not using the carrier. the t-case that i used was a BW 1356. it and tranny came out of '94 f-350 with 7.3 turbo.
