i checked all the electric and it looks to be fine. but it happened again. and it was the coldest day of the year so far. had to get it towed. i tried jumping the starter off the battery to bypass the solenoid and its still the same, starter turns but doesnt engage. so i guess it has to be starter. gonna take it to someone who rebuilds them and see what he has to say
To go into a little more depth with the starter story I told you earlier, I had to change mine out in a convinence store parking lot, and to make things go quicker and easier, I had someone go get me a starter while I removed the old one with borrowed tools. When I went to get a refund for the old one since it had a lifetime warranty, they tried to tell me it was good, but the new one had solved the problem, so they had to refund my money. Sounds like you might be in a similar situation with a starter that has a bendix with a broken spring in it or something that sticks occassionally or maybe a bent shaft. Just seems to me that replacing that starter might be the cheapest, quickest way to fix the problem, and if it doesn't the cost, of that chepo rebuilt would just about be worth it's cost in diagnostic as it would eliminate that possibility. No warranty with the problem starter?
If you're absolutely sure the condition of the gear teeth on the flexplate is adequate, the only thing I think of at this point is a sticking Bendix (defective starter) or an electrical system supplying inadequate power to the starter (perhaps caused by a constant draw on the battery weakening it) but I really doubt the latter as, in my experience, the battery needs to *significantly* drained for the starter & Bendix to not operate. Let us know what the problem is when you get this figured out, would ya?
ok i will. right now i hope its the starter so i can bring it back get a new one or get it rebuilt and have it running. its too cold for me to go outside.
yeah i turned over the whole fywheel and looked.the teeth look fine. im gonna take advantage of the lifetime warranty on those starters and get a new one hopefully.
so they still wont take my starter back. but i found out the starter gear will turn both ways. is this supposed to happen?
No. It has a one-way clutch behind the gear. The gear is supposed to be able to drive the flywheel gear, but if the engine starts, and you happen to hold onto the starter a little too long, the flywheel will try to start turning the starter gear. So the clutch bearing lets the gear freewheel in this direction, so it will not ruin the starter motor.
Take the starter back to the store and throw a fit. If they have no way to load down the gear, then how do they test it?
Unfortunately, I still haven't had time to get someone to show me how to get the quote thing to work, but see thread #10 and #33. And don't forget about the possibility of purchasing another and THEN returning the one you have (regardless of whether that solves your prob or not, by now they deserve it!). And if there's more than one of the same chain stores in your area, try a different one, (they can't all only hire ******.) If I were there I'd, be inviting that guy out to "come out side and look at my truck, it's parked around back..." It's pretty darn ridiculous anyway, the place that rebuilds them gets good ones back all the time and it's no big deal and if they're so sure that ones good, why don't they just swap it out and sell it to someone else.
Don't ask how or why, but when i rebuilt my 460 i had Horrible starting issues, i put a new starter and battery in it and it still didn't fix the issue, So i lived with it, it would only start cold.
I put enough miles on the truck (250 or so ) And changed the oil, and for some reason then on it started every time hot or cold !
Also, have you checked your timing i mighta missed that part somewhere. are you running an MSD setup or stock ignition ?!
Tweaker-Not a timing issue, sometimes the starter won't engage at all.Newly rebuilt motors tend to run hot because they're tight, and when you combine the tight with the hot, they are hard to start . Once you got yours broke in a bit, the starter didn't have to work as hard, so the issue went away.Alexjp91 either has a bad starter or a wiring issue, and right now the popular consensus is starter.
ok i finally got it. it was the starter, the one-way clutch. i took it down there pointed it out and they gave me a new one. they test it down there by hooking it up to a battery, they dont put any load on it and thats why the problem didnt show up on their test. if this starter gives me problems im gonna try to get my money back and buy a new one. probably be worth all this hassle.
thanks for the help
