I a 1997 FOrd Explorer.
It has been running really rough.
I am expectibng an IAC Valve issue. I was think that the belt might also be causing the problem. I purchased a belt from a store, and with curing asnd swearing. I got it on right.
The first timme it had poped right off. The second time I put it back on, It didnt seem to be tense enough for all tyhe parts to spin.
I drove the truck out, about 2 blocks. The steering was ok, as long as i didn;t drive too slow.
The engine is running with bad idling like a diesel.
I took it apart this mornign, and not having drvien anywhere, I am not sure if the steering is any better. It is stil runnning rough.
Is the fact that I put the belt on when its cold have anythign to do with it?
The other part is, is what is enough tension? I pulled it the tensior back to tight, and did up the bolt to tighten it down. But when i restarted it, it seemed to be running rough as well.
It sounds like you have 2 seperate problems. I don't see how the belt can relate to it running poorly. Try cleaning/replacing the IAC for the running issue. Take the belt off and spin all the pulleys to see if they all spin freely. Don't forget the tensioner pulley, as that may be your problem.
the tensioner pulley for the belt can wear on the pin and set cockeyed. that can make the belt come off. if the belt is loose, the steering pump will not turn at the right speed. those are related.-- running rough is not related to the belt. next time belt is off, look at the idler and see if it is aligned with the other pulleys.
I've read some posts recently (elsewhere) about people getting aftermarket belts that were just a little too long. You might want to compare the new belt to the old one.
i think part of the issues was, the belt was a little loose.
I tightened it some more using more leverage. I was in a parking garage, so time wasn't an issue, as it was warm.
PArt of the squeak i thought, was a hose that somehow managed to work its way against the belt.
The other racket, as i discovered on the way home was that the the battery wasnt charging, and the noise was coming from the alternator. So I am not suer, but i think at this point that will be next.
I tensioned up the belt. The resulting squeal was from the side that the alternator is on.
I think its the alternator that's bad.
But I could be wrong.
Its not charging at all.I Have never heard one squeal like that.
Use a hose as a stethoscope and isolate the noise... Yes the alternators will squeal, with bad bearings, and worn slip rings, both replaceable. Regulator comes with new brushes.
i get the feeling that all that stuff would have to be ordered.
I rely on my vehicle as it is my only one..
So I will have to just replace it full out.|
The last one i had to replace was 75 bucks. Plus labor.
That was a civic, and i could figure how to get it out.
Now this one will be easy, as it is on the top of the engine.. all nice and perdy..
Turns out that the issue was wholly my fault from the beginning.
It turns out that I bought the wrong belt.
I thought my truck is a 97..not a 98..
I went to the dealer, got a spring and a belt.
The 300$ for the alternator seems extreme. I replaced the belt with the new one.. took off then spring. It was the part that was giving me all the grief.
So far..just waiting for a boost..everything checks out ok. It all seemed OK.
