My father in laws 97 f150 is stuck in 4 low, the switch doesnt respond, what are some of the possible things for me to check? Fuses? (I need to dig up a fuse "map" as he has lost his owners manual) Is there a reset button? Switch maybe? Thanks
Check the vacuum motor on the front drive axle. Maybe one of the hoses broke.
Those things do give problems sometimes but that would only keep the axle locked, not affect the transfer case sticking in 4LO.
He's either got a blown fuse, bad wiring connection or a bad shift motor. The "SHIFT-ON-THE-FLY" system also goes through the GEM.

Just to be sure he know this but the truck has to be in stopped, in Neutral with the brakes applied before it will come out of 4Lo.
Yep, that is the proper way.....all of my trucks don't cooperate well that way.
I do it this way:
Truck in Park
Shift from 4x4 lo to 4x4 hi
Shift the transmission to Neutral
**Keeping your foot firmly on the brake the whole time**
They always shift right out when I do that....then I shift from 4x4hi to 2wd in Drive.
If I do it the "proper" way it often takes a very long time or just doesn't want to shift out.
