Guys I just have one question..? How come on our 92-96 F-150s the overdrive in our E4ODs are anemic, just plain suck? I mean even after regearing to 4.10 gears and souping my 302 motor up some, overdrive is hardly used unless the highway is flat for many miles....
Mine goes into OD at about 37MPH if I'm on a flat and not into the throttle much. And that's with a 4.10 rear and 32" tires. Could be that the fins on your torque converter are worn or that your 302 isn't running as well as you think. (I never did care for my 302, though).
Try a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix. The solenoid valve that shifts it into overdrive may be sticking. I had a problem develop with the E4OD in my 95 E150 van in which it started shuddering, the Lucas stuff cured that and I picked up 2 mpg on a 1500 mile trip to the east coast and back. Apparently, although it was going into overdrive the converter wasn't locking up due to a gummed up solenoid. You sure you have an E4OD and not an AOD or AODE?
I after 18 of these trucks and almost as many tranny. I put shift kit in. actually will lug in drive if I don't press gas .Overdrive works fine. Just how I like it. On touch of gas it down shifts . Hope you figure it out.
No guys that's the thing I don't have a problem with the overdrive engaging at all it works great, just it likes to downshift when I come to a hill or any steep grade...
Your 302 lacks the torque it needs to pull a hill in overdrive.................. The transmission's making it's own decision here for you It's actually helping in that regard and extending your transmission's life.
Yep.. that's the way the electronic tranny's are programmed, downshift from OD as soon as additional load is sensed. The AOD was better in this regard, you have to floor it to get out of OD, so you can use the motor's TQ to pull grades at HWY speed.
