Throttle Body for 300's!

Well I pretty sure this will work, but I haven't tried it yet. I have done some extensive research and I have found the throttle bodies for the 4.9L, 5.0L, and 5.8L Ford engines for 1994 and 1995 don't differ other than the way they set on the intake manifold (according to the Chilton's manual that covers these years and actual visual inpection of a 4.9L and 5.0L engine). Here is my idea! BBK/Edelbrock make a Twin 56mm (#3837) and 61mm (#3838) High-Flow Replacement Throttle Body for the 5.0L and 5.8L EFI engines. I talked to the tech service at Edelbrock and was told the only reason why the don't list the 4.9L as compatible is they haven't tested it. Has anyone tried putting one of these Edlebrock throttle bodies on their Ford 300? I don't forsee any problems other than maybe a lean fuel/air mixture. I'm pretty sure it will work! Anyone have any comments on this before I try it out?

Grazier1, after you try it out, report back and tell us how it goes. I would be interested in finding out how it helps your performance and if it fits!

Thanks.

Well I must hang my head in shame! Talk about frustration! I was able to get everything to hookup correctly but the bore size on this BBK twin throttle body is just to big. The problem is the intake manifold on the 4.9Ls can't be bored out enough to properly match the new throttle body's two 56mm openings. Man I was so depressed after this. The 4.9L's already have a hard time breathing and a FIPK helps but man it would have been awesome if I could have bored out the stock intake manifold to fit the new throttle body! Oh well I'll subsitute a 1" throttle body spacer instead and see what that does!!!!

So how big is the stock 302 throttle body? It's got to be smaller than the BBK one and should be larger than the stock 300 T/B. If you could open up the 300 intake to match a stock 302 T/B, you might get a setup that works. Now all you need is a 302 owner to swap you his stock T/B and some cash for your BBK.

1. The 4.9 T/B measure 43mm each; How large were you able to safely bore the plenum holes out to?

2. What are the sizes for 302 truck, 302 Mustang, 5.8 truck, 460 truck throttle bodies? Flange stud hole spacing?

3. Conically rebore that 1-inch spacer plate, your 4.9 plenum to the BBK/Edelbrock size. You won't be able to optimize those 56mm bores, but you will realize a diminished airflow (and be able to use your new toy and the spacer!).

I just thought of something else to do...go find a competent welding shop that does heliarcing, and have them build up that EFI plenum big enough to bore 56mm holes. In fact, were it me, I'd tour shops 'til I got a price I liked.
Ya gotta do this...I gotta know how it runs!

I'll see what I can do! I know I can get away with the throttle body spacer but the plenum on the intake just isn't big enough for boring it over more than a few millimeters. The EGR system I believe will get in the way. It sits right next to the TB. It just isn't beefy enough to bore. However your idea about using a stock 302 TB sounds very tempting. I'll do a comparison check via gaskets for the 4.9L and 5.0L stock TB's. I might be able to get away with boring the 4.9L if the difference isn't to much! I have also heard that Clifford Performance makes a slightly bigger TB for the 4.9L. I call em and see if this is true!

I went outside last night and pulled the T/B off my 4.9, and did some wall thickness measuring on the passages leading from the back of theT/B mounting flange into the plenum chamber.
Wall thickness at the thinnest point is 2mm, which means you'd probably want to heliarc in some gussetting prior to doing a 1.5mm enlargement.
The flange itself is only 12mm thick at its' thinnest, so I think your idea of a 1-inch spacer plate is good.
Here's the plan: (1), gusset the top of those two passages, (2), open the mounting flange holes and those passages to 44.5mm, (3), conically rebore the spacer plate and the mounting flange so that the narrow end of the cone is 44.5mm and the large end is 56mm.
You already have the Edelbrock/BBK unit, may as well use it.
