Radio not working code?

Radio not working code?
Need a little help with radio issue. 1996 v6 2wd extcab. Stock radio am/fm cassette. Took it out replaced it with a later model factory unit with cd. used the male female plugs etc. got it to work with the exceptio thatthe door chime came on when the door was opened and the battery would now go dead after a couple days of sitting. So I knew one of the wires in the connectors was wired incorrectly causing the chime to come on when it shoudn't and sucking the battery after a couple days. So i took the cd unit out and put the original back in and it wouldnt work at all. hmm ok so i put the new cd unit back in and that would now not work at all either. f$#@%^&&
the radio fuse checked out ok.
so my question is ...why is this happening? did i get locked out where i need a code or something? i do not have a code. heeeeelp no music.....
the displays on the radio do not come on. however when i press the clock light the clock does come on and keeps memory.

Ok when i put the original radio back in the car cranks fine after sitting for a couple days.
So the only issue now is that it appears that I am somehow locked out. Is this correct? Do 1996 models have to have a code from the dealer or something?
