Was driving home last night. The truck made a little noise under the hood.
seemed to sputter a little an then a knock. Was in the boonies with my 8 year old daughter so I drove it home.
Started it this morning. The knock was not very noticeable, but after it warmed up it seemed louder. Oil pressure is good. I has been smoking when cold lately.
I hope that is all it is. I did the search before the post. Read about a test by loosening the lines one at a time to locate the faulty injector. Would you suggest doing this before replacing the injectors.
I would test to make sure the knocking stopped, no need putting new injectors in a dead engine unless you have them just laying around and can not return them.
Door never locked at my house, I have a 90 pound Dalmation that like to eat.
Food, shoes, doors, golf *****, blankets, rugs......people are tastier and tender too.
Plus people jump and scream, makes them more fun to eat.
The other stuff just lays there.
My dog rides in the truck. Thats why I like the crew cab. Had to leave her at home with the wife today. Drove the regular cab gasser today. I sure like the mighty ford much better.
It's more comfy. Can fit the whole crew and the dog. She eats seat covers, oil quarts,
cel phones and lunch boxs left in the cab.
I can't take the dalmation with me, she likes to lay in my lap.
There is no room for a 90 pound dog between me and the steering wheel.
And I am just a little 6'3" 200 pound skinny fellow.
It does knock at idle. It seems to get louder with higher rpm. When I started it smoked white smoke and did not stop. Can't tell if it is coming from heads or bottom end.
I used the broom stick trick. No definite results or bad hearing take your pick.
I'll get it inside Saturday and try the injector test. I appreciate the suggestions.
I got a dalmation too, she is a real lap hound psycho, drive me nuts but i love her... shes old and fragile.. born in 96, she loves sun spots on the carpet, and she is spoiled like you wouldnt believe.
If you narrow it down to an injector, before replacing, try runing a few cans of Diesel Purge through the things, about three ought to do the trick.
You don't pour that in the tank, you have to remove the line to the lift pump and the return line and get a coupe of pieces of hose and run the stuff straight out of the can. It wil take care of most knocking problems unless the injector is completey toast. If that stuff doesn't take care of it, it's replacement time.
Came home from work today and cracked the lines one at a time. The drivers, side one from the back did not change the idle. the rest did.
I also listened to the knock. It seemed to be louder under the truck. Anyhow after tinkering around a little I revved it up. Higher than I ever would when driving.
( I drive like grampa jones) It clattered a little then stopped and planed out pretty smooth.
The knock is now gone back to the tick that it was before. At idle it runs rough and a steady stream of grey smoke.
I still like the dog stories better than the truck stories. Might try the purge. Got a feeling its ready for injectors.
Thanks a bunch. My worst fears are gone.
