Adding oil between oil changes?

I have a 2007 F250 with a 6.0 with 17K miles. I change the oil and filter every 4K miles ( I use 15w-40 Rotella)....I use the truck as a daily driver....not much towing....I broke the truck in according to the book. I do not run it hard other than highway speeds of 70-75 mph.

I recently had to add a quart of oil between changes....is this common or within the engine specs? I welcome your thoughts on what your experience has been with the truck needing additional oil between changes. Ford dealership says this in not out of the normal. Thanks in advance for your help.

Adding oil between changes on a Diesel is pretty much a norm for most owners. I tow up 12k sometimes with my 132k 04 and it has no leaks. I run mine 7500 between changes useing motocraft oil. I have to add a quart or more sometimes. BTW I would be going a lot longer than 4k on your oil changes, Your dumping good oil out..

So in less than 4k miles on the oil, your oil level is dropping 1qt below the bottom of the cross hatch area on the dipstick?

Are you letting the truck sit at least 20 minutes after shut down before checking the oil level?

I checked the oil the other morning before I started the engine, at that point, it was about a quart low. I assume that all the oil from the top of the engine would have drained down overnight. Is this assumption correct?

Yes all of the oil would have drained in that time period. If the oil touches the cross hatched area then no additional oil is needed, also both sides of the dipstick should be looked at and the highest level used. The cross hatch area covers 2-quarts of oil from min to max.
Your truck was 1 quart below the minimum cross hatch area?

The oil touched the bottom of the cross hatch area when I checked it that morning. I had the oil changed at the dealer today, I will monitor it to see what happens over the next 5000 miles. Do these engines typically use more oil during the first 20-50K miles?

Over the life of my 06, I've experienced a large variance in oil level readings by upwards of a quart. It has never been consistent from one check to the other. I've attempted to be consistent in how I measure the oil in regards to time after shut down and how the truck is sitting. Still it varies. My theory is that the same amount of oil doesn't always drain back into the pan. As a result, if the oil touches the hatched area on the dip stick, I've learned to be happy.

At 5k mile oil change intervals and currently at 26k miles on the odometer i have never added oil and the level on the stick has never changed. Right dead smack in the middle between min and max. I put 13.5 qts every oil change

Ditto for me. Almost the same mileage and never added oil. The only difference is I add 14 quarts and the level is at the top of the cross hatch marks (or just under it) for me.

If you are at the cross hatch you do not need to add oil. I put in 13.5 quarts when i do an oil change and that leaves the oil at the middle of the cross hatch throughout the OCI interval (5k miles).

None of the ones i have been around use oil unless there is a leak someplace. If you have no external engine oil leaks, you may have an oil leak at the turbo and it is being burned.

OK, I put on an sf-2500 bypass filter. I put in 16 quarts of oil and I still do not have oil on the dipstick crosshatch. I talked to the dealership and they said to add more. I have hesitated but my start adding quarts. I am on my first "do it yourself" oil change running the rotella 10-40 synthetic. I don't want to overfill. Anybody else ever put in this much oil? rc

By adding the FS-2500 bypass filtration system you have increased the capacity of the oil system. If you are reading the oil level, with the truck on level ground and waiting at least 20 minutes after shut down to check the oil level then, yes you need to add more oil until the oil level is at least to the cross hatch area on the dipstick. I believe the FS-2500 system requires an additional 1.5 quarts when the filter is changed, you also have to allow enough oil to fill the lines when you first add oil after the initial install of the system. Call Filter Solutions and asked them how much oil the system holds.
