I called the closest Ford dealership to me asking if they could make me some keys for my current door locks because they previous owner lost them and they said they only make them for 1998 and up. He told me to call a locksmith but i hear they are pretty expensive. Where can I buy new door locks with keys? I really need them soon because I just got a new stereo and would hate for someone to steal it..
If you take a lock in to the locksmith, it reduces the cost, but it all depends on the place on how hard they hit you. Some of the dealerships don't want to deal with older stuff because they don't figure it will make them enough, which, with that attitude, it doesn't, also their premium pricing is another reason why...
I haven't taken any Ford tumblers apart, but I did on an old 57 chevy I had. They have coded little pieces of metal in there that all are different heights. Your key is ground to these different heights, so when you put the key in, all the little pieces of metal line up, and they let the tumbler turn. They have just a small selection of the pieces, and they just put them in different order for everyones different car door. What I did was take some out that did not match, and put spacers in their place to make the key work. The danger of this is more keys will open the door, but I was not too worried about that.
That's all the locksmith will do. He will grind a key to match the little coded pieces in the tumbler, or you can give him your new ignition key and he will load the correct coded pieces in the right order to make that key work.
You will find the saying "Locks are to keep honest people out" will be true. If someone wants that stereo, a lock will slow them down about 10 seconds.

Most auto parts stores carry door locks. You can usually get a pair of locks with keys for around $20. I had to do that with my 67 mustang. It didn't come with any door keys.

ok ill just do that then. So the locks are universial?
I don't know if they are universal, but the parts stores(I just verified autozone carries them) do have them to fit our trucks. I didn't know you could get them in a matching set with the ignition key though.

No, the ones I got were just door locks. I think they can get a matching set, but it's just one extra key to carry so it didn't bother me.
I had an old 88 Corolla that had no door keys cause it was broken...cost me 35 bucks to have a smith make a new set of keys.....that included 2 copies.....
