hi.
Yes..I KNOW...electronic is better(HA!!!)..
but im old and want my points back!!!!!
i just purchased a 84 bronco 4x4..300 inline6...it has the TFI dist.--unfortunately..it has been hacked up..the wiring sliced and diced...the motor and body are great!!!..but..it runs slugishly and gets hot because the TFI is not advancing the timing...SOOOOO....
what i need is advice on converting it to a points dist..doing away with the electronic and other connected stuff...can i get some help..possibly a wiring diagram???HELP!!!..thanks
Horse
had the same exact problem when all the polution items mysteriously vanished from under my hood on my 84 bronco. If you have the old computer you only have to hook up the portion that advances the timing and it will work like a charm. Get the haynes manual and look at the computer diagram and you will see that only one section of that box works the timing. The other sections can be disconnected.
hi--
thanks for the good advice..i didnt realise u could do it that way...
where im at now is...ive bought and installed a new (only $39) rebuilt 1971 ford 300cid dist. and a excell coil---i unpluged the the old coil wire using the bat(+) jumper off it to run to the new coil...starts up great..seems like power restored..a big rain storm interupted my work before i could fine set the dwell and timing--
WHAT IM WONDering now is----- is the carb controled by the computer too??? will i have to replace it with an older model carb???
I really prefer the points setup ...in the boonies where i live its much easier to troubleshoot and maintain....
any other imput you have would be welcome--thanks again-----
I know what you mean about simplicity. Most of the time, the electronic stuff is reliable and fairly easy to scan and fix. Ocassionally however, a hard to find gremlin makes me wish for the old simple stuff, especially when on the road. Most likely the carb is electronic. Look for an oxygen sensor in the exhaust and wires going to the carb. If the computer (for fuel control) is disabled, the engine will run richer than normal. An earlier carb (pre 80) should solve that.
