I recently replaced my waterpump and thermastat and now if I start my truck and let it sit and idle it will build pressure and blow my collant out from under the cap. What will cause this ? I have been reading the forum and find that there is two thermostats for this model truck, could it possibly be this or am I looking at a blown head gasket ?
2001 7.3L powerstroke
no water in the oil and none coming out the exaust.
What to do?
Well i have to say at idle, it probably is a headgasket going bad. Thats a slow RPM to have that much gasses in the system. It could be a very severely cracked injector cup and broken copper o-ring on the tip of the injector body, but even that would cause a situation with alot of fuel in the coolant, and coolant in the fuel (white smoke).
Could a bad t-stat or one in backwards prevent the coolant circulating and pump building pressure? Just a guess since problem wasn't there before new parts.
Bought the pump at Advance and the Thermastat at the ford place and it is the short one. Its 1 3/4" long and from top to bottom the pump measures 2 1/8".
I do have a little white smoke but after the engine warms, no smoke.I think bad glow plugs. Worse on cold mornings until warm then no smoke.
if you didnt have that problem before , id say its somthing fishy about the t-stat, and or waterpump. did you srain the whole system? but it sounds like you have wrong t-stat or like zx250 said its reversed, and wont open against the preassure of the pump, blowing the coolant through the overflow tank.
Since you can't put a pump on backwards and the engine is not running backwards, something is blocking the flow, if its not the t-stat, then you need to find that rag you left somewhere. I'm gonna go with a bad or upside down t-stat.
I will be tearing it back apart tommorow and going to the ford place to see if I can get the right parts. T-stat is not in upside down.I can only pray its not to serious.
well if you didnt drive it and didnt overheat the motor than you will be fine, just take it apart and check the t-stat, sounds like its stuck in closed position. and make sure its long housing one.
good luck and let us know your findings.

What don't make sense is the t-stat remains closed until it warms enough to open, right? His is backing up into the overflow before it gets warm.
thinking about it, it don't make sense. so it might be a lot of air traped in, causing the gases to back the fluid up?
i would try to disconnec the upper radiator hose off and make sure its full (hose and radiator), before you put it back on.
otherwise it might be a big problem.
A lot of air could cause the problem, but shoud correct itself fairly quick. I can't imagine anyway the rad. hose could have gotten crossed, maybe the heater hoses? Just grabbing for straws now.
