So I get in my truck the other day to warm it up. Starts up immediately. Come back out after about 5 minutes and it is not running. Won't start. Now my anti theft light is flashing quickly so I know it wont start. Tow it to dealer ( devil ). They hold it for 2 days and say your blowing a 30 amp fuse in bank # 30. OK Then it is one of five possible things. They replace the fuse and truck is running for some reason. Dont know why fuse blew. 2 days and $55 later I pick it up, drive it home about 20 minutes. Then the next day get in to start it up and it starts , runs for 45 seconds and pow blows the fuse. Ok issue now. Puyt another fuse and it starts and idles, go to accelarate and pow another fuse. NOw when I am waiting for the "wait to start" light to go out it will blow before that happens. Any ideas or has this happened to anyopne else. Could it be glow pplug heater coil?
I am thinking it is the glow plug relay . The top of the relay has a plastic cap that snaps on iit and that had some melting on it. I am gowing to try and replace that tomorrow and see what happens. If anyone has another idea or has experienced this let me know. Thanks!
Your problem is more than likely the fuel bowl heater element has shorted out. If your glow plug module (most Excursions have a module rather than a relay and cost triple) has some melting on it try that but first do this,
Locate your fuel filter (top of the motor under the PSD cover) and reach around to the back side and unplug the connection that goes to it. Put in the fuse and see what happens.
This same problem occured in the F250 three Winters ago and have run with no fuel bowl heater since. Got the two parts to fix in the glove box ($300!) but have yet to install them.

Absolutely do what Dougger has suggested. You do not want to fix this by replacing electrical parts. The module is probably bad, but if the fuel bowl heater is the problem, a new module can get burned out asap. It's really best to check the circuts to make sure you know where the short is coming from. It much less costly this way. ******** type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_5494206", true); *********>
Thanks everyone. One more note. I got the truck running last night with the fuse and it did not blow. So I figured let me plug in the heater over night because it seemed to blow when the truck was cold and needed to heat the glow plugs. Got up early this morning when it was still cold out and the trcuk started right up with it being plugged in all night. Would you think that the issue is from the glow plug relay or the fuel bowl heater? I priced a new relay from ford today at 105 and dont want to waste it if you think it could still be bowl heater.
Usually when the element fails you'll blow the fuse every time, mine did and most posters with the same problem on TDS say the same thing.
Does your X have two relays atop the motor? If so the first one is the intake heater relay and the second one is the glow plug relay. Most X's have the module which is silver with two large plugs going into it.It's about four inches wide by seven inches long. Pretty sure I recall on TDS some 00 X's have the relay while most 00 X's and I think all 01-03.25's have the module. Not sure how to test the module but have a write up how to test the relay.
The other day bought a glow plug relay from Napa for $76.
I only have the relay on mine with no module. When I called ford for pricing they had both types. Difference about $100 with the module. What is the difference.
Thanks to all who helped out. Bought new GPR today ( no module for my mfg date) and all seems well. Keeping fingers crossed and will see hwat happens in the morning during start up
