I am so glad this forum is here. I have been reading for a while, but will now post. I had a '99 Super Duty with a V10, and I loved that pickup. It had 4:30s and would pull anything I put behind it. However, it would not stand up to a herd of cows in the middle of the highway on a moonless night. Needless to say, that pickup saved my life, my son's life, and my mother-in-law's life; however, it took 3 years to get back to the position of owning another one (I'm not complaining, just stating a fact).
It seems in the meantime Ford has really outdone itself in the evolution of its V10. I just purchased an '05 FX4 Crew Cab. It's an XLT with the sport package, and I absolutely LOVE this truck. I only wish it had the manual 4WD rather than the electronic shift on the fly, or whatever it is. I don't really see the need for manual hubs and electronic FWD. Kind of like putting a tuxedo on a pig.
It is in the shop right now, though, receiving a new gauge cluster. The speedometer and tachometer would sometimes hang up--not on 0 either.
Yes, I had a problem with my tach this past summer. It swung all over the place when I was shifting gears, and when I'd shut the engine off, the tach would rest around 1,500rpm or 900rpm or wherever, except 0. After several hours of driving around town, starting and stopping at many tourist spots, it eventually pegged on 0 when the engine was stopped. And has since acted like it should.
There is a TSB for this problem, and as you've pointed out the fix is to replace the instrument cluster or gauge causing the problem. Something like that anyway.
Enjoy your new rig, Fords' V10 rules the gasser roost,

Everybody in this family have driven thru "cattle drives", but always during the day so we saw them in advance! Never did it in my F350 though I'm sure i will at some point in the future. We do a lot of vacationing out west wth our trailer.
