Coolant temp sensor leak?

Today I was giving some thought to changing thermostat and cleaning my MAF, due to a decrease in fuel economy. Long story short, I went outside to see how much of a PITA it would be to change the thermostat. I followed the upper radiator hose to the engine, if I'm correct, the thermostat is just under the intake tube, just before the throttle assembly, and in a plastic housing. I then noticed that a sensor looking thing ,right behind the thermostat, had coolant around it. The sensor is about 1 inch tall, is toward the driver side, has an electrical connection, and seems to be held in place with a "C" shaped retention clip. Is this in fact the coolant temp sensor? How hard is it to replace? Thanks for any help!

what year is it? I have a 97 3.0 and i had to replace mine because it broke. However, i did not have a c shaped clamp, i just had to disconnect the wires and use a wrench to get it out. It was very easy and had little to no coolant loss. If it is like mine you might just be able to take it out and replace the teflon tape on it.

not too sure in that case. I have yet to work on a 4.0. I imagine it cannot be much different. Hopefully someone else will have a better answer

On my 2.9 ranger, (which the 4.0 is based on) the only things being held in with c-clips are the fuel injectors, at least as far as I know.

If they look like this, then you were looking at the injectors

On the '94 4.0L, the coolant temp sensor was not held in with a c-clip, nor was the wire held on in any sort of way. On my '98 SOHC...I'm not really sure, I'd look if it wasn't cold and dark lol.

Now...on that note...the aftermarket coolant gauge I put in the Ranger did end up leaking...if it leaks, just remove it, wrap the threads thoroughly in teflon tape, and put it back. Problem solved.

As long as the truck isn't warm, it shouldn't leak at all when you remove it.

It turned out to be a leaking thermostat housing, apparently a common problem. I got the "updated" housing, a new thermostat & gasket, and my MAF cleaned for $182 - Merry Christmas.
