What if i don't see the needle move when using the 1/4" drill trick?, it's either moving very little, or not at all, I'm using a mirror to see through the windshield, can't tell if it's moving or not, does the needle move very much???. Thanks

If ur doing what, I think ur doing, then remove a v-cover and watch for the oil to come up and out the rocker area. If none then ur in trouble..And time to pull the pan and reset the oil pump drive shaft and lock washer. so it won't happen again. I use JB weld epoxy on mind ....my 2cents

Silly Q but which way are you spining the oil pump? Oil pumps spin CCW to prime.

You should have oil show up in the dist. housing hole where you are running the drill. Don't be pulling a valve cover. Besides that when the pump picks up oil you will hear the drill motor lug down.

I'm still around just don't care to answer and be called a "peckerhead" plus other comments by another member who said he is new to FE's.
Sorry I must of not learned anything only working and owning FE motors
a day or two myself.
Been accused of being too technical at times with answers, maybe should of said beat the hell out of it, add a tube of RTV good to go.
Ever wonder why Barry R is so successful with the outstanding motors he builds?
Sorry i'm off topic here, questions, my PM is always open if I can answer.
Back to my bier brewing forum........Carl.........

Hi Carl! Hope you had a nice Holiday! I think quite a few members have a lot of respect for you . Myself included. So don't let a few stray comments keep ya away. Your a big part of the group here.

My son has been getting into the home made bier thing. Made a real nice dark we drank last month. Can you pm me the link to that forum? I think he'd like it.

Hey Bud....No need to run off..Like G said....we need your tech head around here...Hell and if you leave who the hell am I going to pick on !! LOL...

You and I kinda come from the same batch of wrench's...WE do know its all in prep and measurements and then more prep... and then more measurements...But some dummies just think you can just bolt on ***** and it works...For some I guess it does.. But thats never been my luck....

Just like with my tube chassis for the altered..Back when.. Alston didnt make one for my body....So My self and a buddy bought the tube and went to welding....and believe it or not..it certified the first time down to 7.50 even tho the car was only good for the 8.90 index....It would run faster..but not a 7.50...lol

No worries. Everyone on this forum are special and family to me in their own way and you know who you are thinking like I do one wrench to another. Must add smarter than I plus respect all of you we will remain close. Russ, i'll get back to ya in a PM just got too many things ignited on this end at the moment that need extinguishing.

Few favorite forums, www.homebrewtalk.com, www.millerwelds.com.
I'll get back into All Grain brewing again this time in 10 vs 5 gallon batches, damn stuff must be evaporating on me. Just wish this POS back would allow me a life to Tig up these SS kegs.
You know I can't leave this forum with my special friends including those that ride short bus. For now.

Thanks for the links Carl. I'll send the bier forum link to Dan. He's making little batches in those brown beer kegs. Has 4 so far! LOL I didn't know what to expect from the first dark. But figuered I've drank some pretty bad shine in my day... how bad could it be?? He did good tho. Nice taste and a good buzz.

Miller forum looks pretty cool. I've been looking for a class to take at the local trade schools. I need to seriously brush up on my welding skills.

Thanks and I hope the back gets better in time. Mine has been holding it's own long as I'm careful. But what fun is that?? LOL.

I don't know if you've gotten any oil pressure yet (I hope I am on the right track here), but 390 motors have a bad habit of dropping the oil pump shaft when the distributor is pulled. I haven't worked on one in about 20 years, but back then the only way to get it back where it belonged was to drop the pan and work from the bottom up.

Hey guys, got the dizzy shaft in, it was out and setting just on the side of the hole, sharpened my needle nose pliers and grabbed it and picked it up a 1/4" and dropped it into the hole and it's fine, i don't know if there is a keeper or set screw or not, but it is back in the hole, i think it was hypoid who told me to take off the oil sending unit and watch for oil when i turned the oil shaft with the socket, oil came up immediately. It's a done deal there, i hope! Again thanks all you guys for your help, i could not have done what i have done so far. You are all the best!!!

There is suppose to be a keeper on the shaft just under where it goes thru the block to meet the dist. shaft. That way you install it from underneath when you put the oil pump in and it can't come out. Unfortunately to many people screw it up and rather than fixing their error the right way, they take the keeper off and drop it in from the top. Of course every time you pull the dist. the shaft comes out of the oil pump.

Thank's bear, there is somthing on the shaft, i could not pull it up and clear out of the truck, pull it up a half an " or so and it hits on the bottom of the top hole, so i think the keeper is still there.

Sounds like somebody installed the shaft upside down or pushed the keeper down the shaft.
