Yep I think you got it if I'm reading it right. There is not that much of the thumbprint on the intake side to begin with. But it sounds like they have been surfaced a few times. Also sounds like the original intake bolt hole might have been fudged a bit to compensate the fit.
It is off in two directions, front to back of motor, back being the worst( that hole 3/32 or more) the hole is to far back of the hole in the head. And when i try to put a bolt in on the bad side its like the intake is not going down enough, i know what you mean, about the bolt hitting high or low on the intake, when i try to put the bolt in the head hole it's cockeyed, SO THEY ARE HITTING AT THE TOP SIDE TOWARD THE HEAD AND THE BOLT HOLES IN THE INTAKE ARE MISSALINED FROM FRONT TO BACK, BUT ONLY ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE MOTER. I have said i don't have any engine experience, but i am getting some now!!!
As you say your not a engine man. Did you happen to remove the guide dow pin for the old iron manifold on the top of block. There's no hole for it in the Edelbrock or other aftermarket manifolds.. And what type of head gaskets our you using. hope not the old steel one's. I've alway had to tighten them slow while the gasket compresses down enough so the others will line up, and keep working the tightening seguence pattern in your book or what came with the manifold shows how to do it.. any way
good luck..my 2cent

What are you using for a gasket on the front and back? I once had a problem of bolt allignment on the front passenger corner of the intake to head assembly. I had to use a 4' clamp to help compress the corner of the intake to block for propper fit. Turns out the problem was caused from using a cork gasket on the front and back which pushed the intake up a little too high misaligning the hole. I pulled it off and used The Right Stuff and it fit fine then.
Hey orich, Yea, i read about those pins, did not say what they looked like or where they were, but when i cleaned it up i didn't see anything like pins sticking up, or i would have remembered that. The gaskets are fel-pro 1247 pinto seal or something like that. Hey thanks for taking a interest.
Ah yes, those cork end gaskets, which as i read, no one uses. This was a dry fit, as wreck amended by edelbrock. So just the 1247 gaskets, and that is it, still didn't fit. Thanks for you interest.
On the front where the cork gasket lays left side by dissy hole is where the pin is located. it's about 5/16" OD and sticks up about 1/4" If it's been removed there should be a hole there.. look at the underside of the OLD iron one and you'll see only a groove where it fits in to about 1" long..

Sounds like you may have the intake on "cocked" a bit. FE intakes can be a real pain, and the Edelbrocks are sometimes off kilter - making it really tough.
I use the distributor as a locating pin - first put it in before any bolts. Then I use a flashlight and a plastic mallet to tap the intake back & forth to try and line up the four corner bolt holes, and square up the "china walls" where the end seals or silicone would go. Once its as close as I can get it, I'll use a feeler guage to check the clearance - or lack of same - at each end of the intake gasket surface. Eight measurements total - front & back, left & right, upper & lower corner. All measurements "should be" equal and close to zero - I'll tolerate about a .010" variance range max - the gasket can handle that. This process sounds complicated, but really only takes 30 minutes. It will tell you whether the intake will fit - or if it needs to be milled/straightened to fit your engine. Not doing this and you risk cracked bolt bosses (real common on FE intakes) or leaks (often pulling oil from the valley).
Well, good news, i just got the other intake, and what a difference!. That other one was way off, this one is perfect, or close. I had no idea that this could and did cause me problems. FFR428, you were right on, saying that you thought it was the intake at this point. You rock!! Thank you more than you know. And thank all you guys who helped, i greatly appreciate you. I know you all were on pins and needles here, so i will let you know how it goes tomorrow.
