ok guys, someone convince me to keep my 300. I have a 78 that is now in peices in the garage. Engine had 120 000 on it when I tore it apart for what I thought would be an inexpensive rebuild. front piston had slight scoring other than that, no problems. I have a 4 bbl intake and split exhaust manifolds for it. Everyone has told me to rebuild it right but that costs anywhere from 800-1200 bucks! You'd think this thing was a jaguar!.And a carb in the range of 300-400 CFM is another 4 bills!
I have a 351W that I was going to put in my Capri. It will bolt into the truck w/minor adjustments.
Can anyone convince me to keep the 6?
I love my six and since you have the chance to rebuild it you could make it really put out some power! You ought to come to http://www.cliffordperformance.com go to there message board and ask the same question and they will tell you why! its a great engine and i love mine!
I ordered an engine kit from http://www.naparts.com for just over 300 bucks. The kit came complete with new Federal Mogul Pistons, Fel-Pro garkets, Sealed Power Camshaft and lifters. Be sure you have the right bore diameter and cranshaft journal measurments. I got 311,000 miles from my first 300. I am very impressed with the 300. Just a simple stock build and I get about 18 city and 22 highway mpg. Hope this changes you mind.
Jury is still out. Let me check that naparts.com...
I like the 6 and agree that it is probably fords best engine for longevity but man they want big $ to rebuild it.

What in the hell are you doing thinking impure thoughts about replacing that glorious inline 6. Like Eddie said inline 6's just don't die, shame on you Eddie for think so too! They put out decent torque to begin with and more if you massage them. If you build them up they run like a raped ape! Hell I have a 94' with stock tires and 3.31 gear with a K&N FIPK, MSD6A ignition and coil and I can smoke my tires for almost 70'. After I redo the exhaust and put in a CompCams 252H camshaft, this motor is going to scream. I love this engine. Their awesome!!!!
Ok, here's the deal. I'm a huge fan of the 351-W, but I'm an even bigger fan of the 300-6!!!!! I personally feel that the 300-6 is by far the greatest motor ever produced by any automaker. It is the most dependable motor I've seen. My dad has one in his van with 225,000. I've seen every mile put on this motor since my Dad bought it brand new and it has never been easy. It was maintained properly, but not easy driving. A friend of mine has an old work truck with the 300-6 in it and it has over 350,000 miles on it and it has NEVER had any major repair done to it. It is worked incredibly hard and it doesn't recieve near the attention it should. That's just my opinion.

Right On TBirdGuy! I love that engine and am on my third one. Probably could still be on the first one, but the bodies kept rotting away. I just took my brother for a ride in my '95 supercab F150 300 six. He is a Mustang 5.0 guy and he was impressed with the truck's acceleration, given it weighs 4200 lbs. I like to call it the "torque monster" and the "big block" six. When I bought this truck I could have gone for the 351 V8 and possibly a 460 and justified it with my wife as we are pulling a trailer, but I couldn't bear the thought of parting with my '84 300 six unless it was replaced by another 300 six.
I'm impressed that you stuck with the 300-6 even though you had the oppurtunity to go with a 351 or a 460. I myself am a DIE HARD big block guy, but I would really have a hard time not going with the 300-6.

Yesterday I test drove a '94 Ford conversion van for sale. It has a 351 V8. Very nice acceleration for a probably 5000+ lb van and I would consider getting it for my wife to tow her trailer, but I still want to keep my 300 I-6 F150. The van is clean, has 90,000 miles, and they are asking $9,000. Sounds reasonable for a starting point. Tight squeeze to fit in my garage though.
LAST EDITED ON 20-Aug-00 AT 12:03 PM (EST)[p]I got that 300-6 kit from NAPARTS.com and it is very high quality rebuild for 300$ I'm running that along with a Offy 4BBL intake and split headers and it motivates my 5000lb bronco good(dyno tested 232hp and 335ft-lbs @ the flywheel W/accessores... no smog equipment)
PS NAPARTS will substitute any cam of your choice in for a small fee, I substiuted stock cam, lifters, and valve locks for compcam stuff for only 80$ more(well worth it)
But sad to say I just killed my 300-6 by swamping the engine and bending a rod(water and compression don't mix!... LUCKY I GOT 3 more 300-6's behind the garage to get parts from!
BTW: use a Edlebrock 500cfm and you will be just fine for only 2 bills.....

You're sure right about the Ford 300-6
I've worked with them in the natural gas industry here in New Mexico, running compressors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They're bullet proof compared to the 460's. Many of the 300's last for years of this everyday use before needing a rebuild.
I have an '83 with the 300 as well... just blew a head gasket and galled a piston. I am heavily considering the 351 swap myself. I am not very happy with the 300. When I get out of my truck and get into my dad's '79 with a 351M, it feels like I am getting in a race car! The 300 runs out of power on the highway quickly. When I load the truck down and tow my boat, it has a lot of trouble maintaining highway speeds. Forget passing. And my gas mileage sux at around 14. My vote is toss it.
