Friends, I'm trying to remove the wiper arms on my 86 F-150 in order to remove the cowl below it. I've been screwing around with this thing for a good hour and can't seem to figure out how to remove them. There is a clip on the arm, which I've pulled back on, but the arm won't release. The clip also holds the arms off the windshield, I presume for blade replacement. Is there something else I'm missing here?
No, just pry them off. I often have to use a small paint scraper - the kind that looks like a mini pry-bar. They just get stuck. If you're careful you won't cause any further damage. Incidently the cowl has some screws that are hard to see. If it doesn't come off easily, there's more screws holding it. Several are hidden on the outside under the hood weatherstrip.
mtflat, thanks so much for your help but are you certain there is nothing more then the clip and some prying? I've put a lot of prying power on that thing and it won't come off the post. Also, I can pull on the arm and it seems to move about a 1/16" off the post but then seems to make contact with something, as if there is something else that needs to be done in order for it to release. And no, the post does not budge, just the arm. Thanks!
Lift the arm away from the windshield, and pull out on the clip, make sure it goes all the way out. Release the arm, and the clip should hold it away from the glass. At that point, it should just be a matter of working it loose. They can be stuck quite well, especially if they have not been removed for a long time, and are in an environment where they can corrode.
Sorry I didn't check back before now. It sounded like Machspeed had already figured out the release clips and how the arm locks them out.
Machspeed, hope you've got them off by now, but just in case here's another tip after reading your last post.
If you insert a hook too deep, you'll catch the notch for the clip and it'll only come up about 1/16". Back off and just barely catch the barrel. Lift carefully and it should come loose.
Thanks guys, I gott'em! I sprayed some penetrating oil in there and let them sit over night. Next day was able to remove them....with some grunt I might add. Suckers were on there.
