I would suppose most of the trucks of a given year are stamped in about the same location, so a photo post of the numbers would be very helpful to others trying to spot these somewhat elusive ID's. A cab off frame photo would also be useful. Hide a few digits in the photo if worried about copying etc.
Dennis, I can call the CA DMV's 800 number, and run any VIN I want to.
It makes no difference where the vehicle is, or what it is.
The info will be passed along in seconds, and it covers the entire US, and some foreign countries.
I've never run a VIN from a vehicle in Canada, but I have run VIN's from cars in Europe.
If the vehicle's title has a lien, that will be known.
If the vehicle's title is cloudy, that will be known.
If it's stolen, that will be known.
If it's clear, that will be known.
I buy several old rolling piles of misery every year, so calling that 800 number beforehand is a must.
I do not see how that is possible. Every time I call the DMV hotline with VIN numbers of stuff that is out of state, I get the "its not in our system sir" reply. Is there a special department to ask for to get the magic VIN genie? I find that it helps to check with both the CHP and the DMV to check a vehicles status of stolen or not. The only thing I am aware of with the online DMV is to check the availability of vanity plates, and smog records(at the BAR site). If there is such magical link, can you PM me to me?
(BTW 11220 will get you connected almost instantly)

I know I should probably start a new thread, but I thought I would throw a post onto this one first for a couple reasons.
I just joined this forum because I am the new owner of a "Frankentruck" like Sedly's. It is titled as a 1977 f100 but it is on a 4wd drivetrain and frame supposedly from a 1973. I found this post to be extremely helpful because it answered many of my questions.
I know I can look up the numbers myself with the provided information, but I was wondering if it is OK to just post them all at once for the professional number crunchers since it would likely be a whole lot quicker? And if so, should I start a new thread?
I don't have the numbers right now though. It's is at the smog station and I don't get it back until tomorrow.
Anyways, thanks. This has been a helpful site to sift through.
