what year is it?
The original Certification Labels weren't water proof despite the clear plastic cover, and peeled off. The ink used to print the labels faded badly.
It was possible back then to get new ID Plates & Labels with the correct info from Ford. But outside of dealers, some body shops and DMV's, few ppl knew that.
It was also an involved process. Only an authorized Ford dealer parts employee could request the new ID labels. A secret code was asked for by FoMoCo once the parts person calling Ford reached the department that handled these requests. No code? = SOL!
Whether stolen and recovered, or as a result of needed body work, a vehicle inspection by the local police was mandatory, and a report made. FoMoCo would then ask the parts ppl what the case number on the police report was.
Ford would verify the info was correct, and if so, new ID plates & labels were sent to the Ford dealer. To the dealer....not the owner, nor the body shop...etc., to the dealer.
How many of y'all would like to put your vehicle thru this process...then or now?
,but when the OP mentioned in post #9 that he thought someone"ran a bead' on the frame vin# that compounded with diff dr tag and 'covered over' striker stamp. To me that seems pretty fishy. Now as we get further along however. It appears the striker tab is legible and no bread on the frame. So it's all good
You had alrady posted Axle BOM info.
I thought I was clear about that
One call will determine whether the title is cloudy or clear.
Does your DMV have a website?
With a website, you can type in the VIN to see if the truck has a clear or cloudy title.
Ppl here in La La Land hate the DMV. It takes hours to get anything done.
The long lines form to the right and stretch out the door and around the corner...sometimes around two corners.
It's a little easier if you make an appointment first.
Yes, that can be done here. Welcome to California.
Luckily, if you belong to AAA, most DMV transactions take minutes.

Sedly,
Are you a CAA member ?
They have a member service for that topic
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I used to be self-sufficient until one day I was without the things I needed.
Called a tow truck and it cost me $50.00 haul my car 8 blocks.
AMA Membership back then was $36.00
Do the math

Now I have AMA Plus.
5 free tows to a distance of 150 KM
5 gasoline deliveries free maps ,Triptiks
No charge registration fees for licensing
I can even use certain businesses to purchase things from to help offset membership costs.
all sort of things
It makes no difference where the vehicle is, or what it is.
The info will be passed along in seconds, and it covers the entire US, and some foreign countries.
I've never run a VIN from a vehicle in Canada, but I have run VIN's from cars in Europe.
If the vehicle's title has a lien, that will be known.
If the vehicle's title is cloudy, that will be known.
If it's stolen, that will be known.
If it's clear, that will be known.
I buy several old rolling piles of misery every year, so calling that 800 number beforehand is a must.

as for putting a later body on an early frame, maybe these were his spare parts from putting the early body he loved on the stouter later running gear?
I have BCAA - 4 tows to 160km and 2 tows up to 360kms, I could drive to 100 Mile, break down, and be towed all the way back! $122 for the year for Premium membership, so many features I can't remember them and I get discounts at restaurants and hotels too! and the business purchase thing too.
ICBC isn't that bad for me, I never get in trouble though so my rates are cheap, about $100 a month for work insurance.
I thought all the non-industrial vehicle manufacturers went to 17 digit VINs in 1980 or 81 and placed them on the dash?
I bought a 4x4 once that was built out of different parts trucks, spent too much for it and took apart and sold for parts, didn't want to deal with all the problems.
I could be wrong, going from memory:
was there a cowl tag or one on the top of the firewall, it also will have numbers on it, body color code and sometimes VIN
look under the bench seat for the build sheet as I have seen some put there before
have you compared the VIN on the stickers on the drivers side door jam to the metal VIN plate on the door itself? I think I saw a VIN on a sticker before...
there was no inspection sticker on the windshield? thats always a good sign
