thanks a million Mil1ion,that pretty much answers the fact that two different years were showing up when i ran the vin number. So what can you tell me about the gear ratio?Or am I supposed to start a new thread on this subject?
Right on I figured it to be a 4.10 ratio, only because thats what I read on the carrier when i popped the cover off. There were other comments and suggestions earlier in this thread on how to figure out what year it might be,the grill is split, down the center it says XLT.The glove box says CUSTOM,and at the back of the box it says RANGER.ALSO Because of this forum I have been informed that my truck is classified as a HIGHBOY bacause it has the DIVORCED transfer case,8 lug,F250 4x4, built in '73- '77.5.Am I correct in saying that?
Oh ya O.K,right on Mil1ion,you have really helped me out.I do have a few other things I am sure I will need help with.I am going to start re-doing the front end,so I would appreciate the help. Thanks again merry Christmas.
The vin decoder at the top of the page says the truck is a'75,the decoder in the frequently asked question area www.medicine.wise.edu says the truck is a '76.There is also an area to put in the front and rear axles but to be quite honest I havn't figured out the code system yet.
Maybe try these ,the last 6 digits on the vin are (a81884).
Parts catalog sez:
1975 Serial Number range: V20,001 to X40,000
> > 1976 Serial Number range: A00,001 to D20,000
> > A81884 = 1976
Rear Axle: Dana ID # 603717 - ? but you didn't list the 7th digit.
It could be: 1, 3, 9, 10, 11, 12.
1 & 3 are listed for 1977 / 9 thru 12 are listed for 1976.
My apologies for not getting back sooner. A drunk driver hit and knocked over a power pole at 9:30AM.
Over 2,000 homes were without power. The damn thing wasn't fixed till 11:30PM.

Quite true, but I'm the only Ford partsman on this site.
Giving 1000's of Ford parts numbers to FTE members = gratis = 11,100 posts in 13 months.
btw: The ID information I typed in post #19 was strictly "off the cuff" = from memory.
I wonder who else coulda listed all that info on this site without using a reference?

That bad boy had to be stolen some where along the line.
That's not necessarily true. Damaged doors were replaced by used doors on 1000's of trucks, and ppl forgot to switch the Warranty/Rating Plates.
The original Certification Labels weren't water proof despite the clear plastic cover, and peeled off. The ink used to print the labels faded badly.
It was possible back then to get new ID Plates & Labels with the correct info from Ford. But outside of dealers, some body shops and DMV's, few ppl knew that.
It was also an involved process. Only an authorized Ford dealer parts employee could request the new ID labels. A secret code was asked for by FoMoCo once the parts person calling Ford reached the department that handled these requests. No code? = SOL!
Whether stolen and recovered, or as a result of needed body work, a vehicle inspection by the local police was mandatory, and a report made. FoMoCo would then ask the parts ppl what the case number on the police report was.
Ford would verify the info was correct, and if so, new ID plates & labels were sent to the Ford dealer. To the dealer....not the owner, nor the body shop...etc., to the dealer.
How many of y'all would like to put your vehicle thru this process...then or now?

Well that's two out of three saying it's a'76.So the next step for me is going to the DMV,and see what they have to say.The rear axle # 603717 11,which makkes it a '76.Thanks Bill really appreciate your help. The vin from the side rail matches the one on the door post.If you were to look at the door post sticker you can't really make anything out,the odd # or letter. But,with vin written on a piece of paper and compared to the door post, the 2 #'s match.Well at least I am getting the answers I need. Thanks again.
