Overhead Consule Display
</O
Bought my truck used in September, the overhead display did not work. Mode buttons illuminated but not the display. Dealer said they’d look at it for @ 75 bucks labor. After ready some posts about pulling out he circuit board and checking the resistors, yesterday I decided to see what’s up there.<O

>Couldn’t find any screws on the inside of any the compartments, so I tugged a little at one end. Because of the give, I figured (correctly) that it only had clips holding it up, as suggested in some of the posts. So I grabbed the other end and tugged, snapping ALL 4 of the plastic pieces holding up the shell (my luck).<O

Pulled off the display, which was only held on by three screws, and disconnected the wiring harness. The backside of the board is covered in some thin black foam insulation. There was a screw in the middle of the board holding it to the plastic housing. I immediately noticed a small black mark on the upper left corner of the display. I figured this probably meant the display was toast. In any case, I pushed on each of 6 or 7 resistors to see if they were seated, and did not feel any give.<O

After looking on the Internet and finding the digital display for about $150.00 and the plastic shell for $130.00 (both E-bay auctions), I decided this fix was done till I could visit the local junkyard. Put the display back together and back in place, and spent about an hour trying to figure out how to get the plastic console back into place since I broke every single clip. Hint… don’t try and drill the plastic. Thought a well-placed screw would hold it up, but trying to drill a small pilot hole just broke off a chunk of the plastic. Ended up using the old stand by, color coordinated (gray) duct tape. Used extra wide pieces starting inside the sunglass compartment and down to the outside of the console about an inch. Doesn’t look too bad, most wont notice till they see the chunk missing. Besides it looks better than the big black mass of plastic that would have been exposed without the cover. This will work till I can find an affordable solution.<O

Later that evening, jumped in the truck to run an errand, and as soon as I turned the key, the display comes on. Guess some of my fidgeting worked, and I forgot to check from all the worry about how to get the broke console back in place. Clicked the mode buttons to cycle through the display, including an off feature (hope this wasn’t my problem). Everything seems to work, or at least nothing’s blinking or reads Zero.<O

Thought I’d post this for anybody thinking of trying this fix, and ask if anybody knows how to remove the overhead display without breaking. The plastic seems to be pretty brittle and unforgiving. I am hoping to find a replacement at the local junkyard, but am afraid it would break also during removal and trying to install.
1)The discoloration in the corner of the display screen is totally normal, they are all like that.
2)I'll still bet that one of the resistors is loose and your pressing on it has (temporarily) made contact. When my screen quit I could make it come back on by pressing on one corner of the circuit board. New resistors fixed it.
3) Gene would be proud of your solution for reinstalling the plastic cover.
