I have recently purchased a 390 that has flat-top pistons that came factory, it has a pretty lumpy cam and a 4bbl intake, i dont know what it came out of but everything has been acid-bathed and cleaned by the local shop. Anyways its going in a 78' F150 with an Np435/205 combo, ford 9" and d44 at 3.50 gearing. It also has a 4" lift and 35/12.50 mud-terrains. Im looking for a roller cam that would work best for low-end torque and gas-mileage as i think this engine is going to be pretty powerful once everything is said and done. Or should i go with a solid lifter cam? Or hydro lifter? It will also have a performer RPM cam, a 600cfm performer carb, MSD dizzy and ignition. Any ideas would be great as im new to the world of FE's and dont really know what cam is going to be my best choice. Any help would be appreciated, cheers.
To me it doesn't appear that you have enough goodies in the engine to justify the expense of a roller cam.... I think just the Edelbrock cam and lifters that match the intake and carb would be plenty.... The Edelbrock components are all designed to compliment each other when used as a package.....

I think a juice cam is for you! I use solid rollers but I'm not looking for gas mileage like you are. So by the time you spend a Grand + on a custom roller cam, lifters, locks, retainers, springs, stainless valves, roller rockers with end supports. It wont benefit you at all! JMO
But I'm a Solid Roller kind of guy! And that's all that I run. But it suits me!!!
