check the bulbs, make sure its all clean in there, and use some di-electric grease in the socket...Usually wigglein the bulb will get it to work...Or it could be a ground loose...

The combination NSS and back up light switch is on the transmission.

To check for continuity to the BU light ...The connector on the firewall can have a 12 volt power supply hooked to it for testing.

It could also be the switch mounted at your shifter linkage...Had to rebuild mine once- Ford didnt believe in dielectric grease back them it seems.

That's a normal situation for these trucks.

That's why I suggested putting 12 volt jumper wire to the BU light wire to see if the BU lights come one that way..(bypassing the switch)

Remember this switch just goes to a certain position to close the circuit (allow power to continue along) to light up the lights.

They also have to have a good ground.

Something that deteriorates over time.

Sounds like it is time for some IN-depth inspection.

you got a wire diagram I can look at to see which wire gets the 12 volts....

Also in your picture where the connector is just above it in the main harness to the left not the right to firewall...there is a black wire not connected to anything....

for the wires
the truck harness has
White/black/red/red

the NSS wires
Black/purple/Red/Red

The white/black and black/prurple are the only two to let truck start.....

the black wire on truck lets the backup lights come on with 12V

the most voltage I find while truck running is 0.5V

this truck has emissions missing so I have a white wire also from harness/black one/ and a light blue....
the light blue comes from firewall
the white one has some voltage on it
the black dont know...

since those were soldered on
