ok, here's the newest malady to befall my 2000 F350SD ....
driving home from work last night, the ABS idiot light comes on.almost immediately after i notice it, i lose the speedo, turn signals, fuel gauge, and the climate control selecter. the PSD is still running strong, and as i'm in the motor city, i continue on down the xway and home.
this morning, i go out to assess the damage. i find no blown fuses. the beast still starts fine, but now i hear something under the hood or behind the dash, like maybe a fan or small motor that is struggling to get up to speed.
not sure what/where to look next. anybody suffer a similar situation ?
Do you have access to a scanner? With that much going at once it doesn't sound good. You might try and double check the fuses with a multi-meter just to be safe. It kind of sounds like your air bag control module may have gone south on you.
Have you tried to locate your new sound yet? Does it make the noise with the key on, or just when the engines running?
ok, already checked the fuses with a meter, they're all good. don't have a scanner available.am in the process of chasing down one item at a time, as these problems don't seem to all be connected, circuit-wise. i'm half-expecting that this is gonna be an issue somewhere in the wiring harness, like a fusible link burning out and taking adjacent wires with it. where will i find this airbag module ? haven't tried closing in on the sound yet, but it only did it when i cranked the diesel up. i knew there had to be a fellow leatherneck out there to cover my six !
update - tore half the dash out last night, don't find anything amiss, but then i also didn't find the flasher unit either.where did they hide it ?
am spending some quality time this afternoon under the hood, where did they hide the ABS module ?
this would probably go a lot smoother if there was a real schematic on how kansas city wired this truck up, instead of the generic engineering diagrams in this aftermarket manual.
Do the turn signals on the truck work, just the dash indicators are out, or when you turn a blinker on just nothing happens? Thinking about it some more the ABS module might affect the speedo & odo, but not the rest of the gauges. Have you checked the wires on the back of the instrument cluster, or removed the plastic cover off the steering column to check those wires out?
By the way the ABS module is mounted on the Electronic Hydraulic Control Unit (EHCU) located on the drivers fender under hood.
I have had the same thing going on with my 99 for the last couple of years. For me it only occures when it is cold and wet. Strange things happen, for instance the dome lights come on, the horn will start to blow, the AC/Htr blower will continue blowing after you turn off the truck and take out the key. I also get the clicking/static sound from somewhere under the dash and at times under the hood. Also I have times after starting up the ABS light and the air bag light stay on, then when it warms up they will go off. the two most standard things are the ABS light and the blower motor running.
All i can figure out is that somewhere the circuit is being completed and then things come on, of course then the batteries run down!! Took them out yesterday and had to charge them both. So for now, at night I disconnect the batteries.
I would love to know what to look for, but I am at a loss.

Reason: adding
sitrep 1800 hrs -
turn signals don't work at all, don't even hear the clicking of the relay. but yet the emergency flashers work fine.
fuel gauge will jump when the lead is shorted out, so apparently the sending unit just happened to go bad at the same time as the other troubles.
ABS light still stays on, speedo still doesn't work, climate control selector still doesn't move the damper door, but at least i can use the defroster now.(guess i have to add vacuum lines to the to-do list, or does this mean a vacuum control module to locate/test ?)
that is all for today, i've run out of light and the weather's against me.

It sounds like you have a leaking windshield and the water is running down into your fuse box or into the PCM. I would check for dried water stains in these areas.

to gilkeson - i had a 90 F250 that drove me nuts like that.found the gremlins hiding in the trailer wiring harness.the previous owner had spliced into it to power a rear spot/flood with a quick-tap, and never bothered to seal it.
(and of course, that's the first thing i checked this time around)
