Factory stereo/CD player skips

Our 1996 4.0 Ranger has the typical OEM stereo head unit and the CD player will sometime skip when playing a disk. Not all disks and not all the time. When we inspect the disk its obvious that it isn't scratched.

We're thinking about pulling the unit and cleaning the "light beam". This has worked before on our home unit (seems that dirt/dust collects) so we thought we'd try it on the truck.

Any good ideas or concerns out there? We could use the assist.

Thank you again,

Eric

Sometimes smudges on the disk cause skips also. Anything sticky or moisture will also do it.
