changing an Oil Pan

Hi folks, I was wondering, My oil pan is rotting out, it's pitted so bad the bottom of the pan is always wet with oil. It's not actually leaking out on the ground (yet).
When changing the pan in a 99 PSD, do you have to loosen motor mounts to jack up the motor to clear the oil pickup ??? or can the pan just be taken off and clear the axle ??? I had an old 84 with a 351 in it years ago, and to change the oil pan gasket that's what I had to do.
thanks
Andre'

Yes I do believe the motor has to come up to get the oil pan off.

the motor has to come out to do it right...sorry to say. you have to take the old one off, clean the "gasket area" and with the motor inverted put on new sealent, than reinstall the new oil pan and let it dry...

I agree, my pan is on the edge and if I have to replace it, I think I'm going this route.

To put a new pan in, and not worry about it leaking, pull the engine and flip it over. It's so much easier.

Anyone have a really good step-by-step guide w/pictures to pull the motor easy or fast?

When i get off this hellish peninsula....one way or another...im going to change my oil pan in Aug!

Anyone know how long it would take 3 highly motivated guys to get this done and what potential costs may be involved?

Whats the time limit on the 100k engine warranty? Got mine done under warranty 2 years ago at 99k and they had to remove cab to get motor out.

There is NO way to pull the motor easily. You will incur a lot more expense than just the rotted oil pan pulling the motor as many other components will need to be replaced as well.

OR......cut the crossmember under the engine, drop the rotted oil pan, replace the rotted oil pan, weld the crossmember piece back in and DONE! 4 hours vs. DAYS of bull****.

I know which way I will always do them. I have done 4 cutting the xmember and had NO problems. First one was on my own F550 6x6 two car tow truck.

The xmember already has a huge gap in the middle anyway and is not a stressed member. You will see, when you cut it out,the motor does not even move.

I removed the lower shock mounts and lowered the diff for more clearance as well.

MUCH easier than tugging that damn engine outta there

On a 2wd application you will have to unbolt the I beam mounts for the frt.suspension and lower them, but it's still a TON easier than yankin that boat anchor out!

i've cut the crossmember underneath my 360 FE in my 74 F250 and welded that back up before.....its an old truck and i know that it wasnt a weak link for it cuz the motor wasnt 800+lbs

is there anyway to cut the rivets and slide the cross member back or forth enough to get the pan outa there? I can't look at it myself....(3000+miles away at the moment) but im guessing there are brake lines, fuel lines, and other misc crap in the way?

pulling the motor IS the last option for me....never pulled a motor out of anything newer then a 79 ford truck!
