Coolant leaking from header bolt

Just like it states in the title, I have coolant leaking from the front header bolt on the drivers side of the motor. Anybody else ever had this happen? I think its must have been over torqued at one point! I locktited it back in well see what happens!

A thread sealer would have been good too.

It sounds like someone might have drilled out a broken stud and drilled too far. Coolant should never come out the manifold bolt holes.

Loctite will seal it temporaily however the heat will eventually break down the locktite. You could try screwing in a small stainless steel M8X1.25mm set screw about 3/16" long into the head (Bottom it out) with some rtv ultra copper sealant and then put the stud back in. The set-screw will act as a plug and not solely rely on the stud to prevent a leak.

I actually thought about doing that, but I wasnt sure I would have room to put the bolt back in. Also, I just wanted to see it anyone else had seen this before. I actually removed the bolt and noticed that it was only had about 4 to 5 threads engaged into the head.
I Think I will try the set screw, if I can find one!
Thanks for your input, Lug

I have an old stud out of my 04' and it has 5/8" of thread, the entire 5/8" of thread goes into the head until it bottoms out on the studs small shoulder and runs out of thread.

It is possible that someone put in a helicoil and used a short helicoil which is only about 3/8" or so long. You should run an M8X1.25mm Bottoming tap into the head to clean up the threads before installing the set screw.

Heres a link to a company where I often buy hardware, they have almost anything.

The stud in my hand from my '01 is more like 7/8" of threads before the shoulder.

Cool, thanks for all the help guys. I ordered the set screws from mcmaster carr, along with a blind tap. It is acutally a relief to find this, every since I got the truck Ive smelled a coolant leak and couldnt find it. It never really used any coolant though.
Ill let you know how it works out.

The one I have has 5/8" of thread that threads into the head and then the part of the stud that the nut threads onto (End With the Hex) has about 7/8" of thread.

Weird, mine have 7/8" of thread below the shoulder, and above the shoulder. Not including the hex, of course.

I know the heads are threaded deeper than 5/8" having the threads 7/8" long would make more sense. It must be the difference in years or vendors.

Well, heres how it played out. The tap would not go deeper that 1/2 inch. I am assuming there is a broken bolt in the hole. I installed a stud with loctite bolt sealer and torqued it down. Then installed a nut and torqued it. So far so good, no leaks!
If it starts then the head will have to come off!

Sounds like a reasonable solution... Sounds like someone left a broken stud in there, for sure
