The "special tool" is a straight screwdriver!
Pry those plastic clips off, then simply separate those flexible fuel lines, rip the old filter off, stick in the new one (making sure the "flow" arrow is pointing in the correct direction!), push the fuel lines onto the new filter, and insert the new plasic clips that came with the new filter.

I do believe there is a special tool you will need to disconnect the fuel filter. It is a tool you can find at Checkers or Autozone and they come in a box in about 5 different sizes. Basically they fit around the fuel line and you press one side of them into the fuel filter which releases the clamps of the fuel line and allows you to pull the fuel filter out. They're a royal pain to use but they get the job done.

OK. I work at one of those stores mentioned. Yes, we do sell the tool you're thinking off, and yes it'll do the job. But like everyone else is saying, they're a pain to use, you have to buy the whole set, and the job can be done with a screwdriver(although this isn't any easier than the tool). Hope that helps

fuel filter??
The fuel filter has two white plastic clips. They can be removed by the aforementioned standard screwdriver. The special tools mentioned are for the lines at the fuel rails on the engine.
Gently tap your inertia switch under the dash, until you hear it spring. Then feel the top of it for the button. If the button is up, then the fuel pump is dead. Crank the truck let it run till it quits, then crawl back under the truck and remove the clips.
Little tip. Reinstall your clips in the lines before putting the lines back on the filter. Install the clips with the tabsfacing outward.
Hope this helps.

Paul,I have not been able to change it out yet.My setup has 2 metal clips(1 on each side of filter)i can get those off no problem but the tool the auto store sold me seems to bo the right one but i cant get it off.I tried to spray some PB blaster on the connection, but still wont come loose.I dont know what to do next and the filter ford gave me for the truck seems to be the same size but the nipples on it are a little bit longer the filter that is on the truck is original too.I hope i dont have the problem that everyone talks about having to cut it off or cut the lines.Any other ideas. Thanks

Ok you have the same fuel filter setup that my '94 F150 has. The tool the auto store gave you, is it round and fits around the fuel line? The tool should be able to fit around the fuel line of the fuel filter and one side of this tool should have a "ring" for lack of a better term that fits snuggly into the bigger opening of the flexible fuel line. What I did was spray the fuel filter/fuel line connection with a small amount of liquid wrench. Then pressed the tool into the fuel line while simultaneously pushing the flexible fuel line in the opposite direction. You might have to get a little rough with it but it will "click/give" when you have released the flexible fuel line spring clamps which hang onto to a raised ring on the fuel filter's tube, which fits into the fuel line. If you want email me with your phone number and I can describe to you what you need to do. It would be easier than trying to write it within this message.

If you the filter has not been changed in a long time or if you have been off road or on sanded roads..there is a strong likelyhood that bits of gravel/sand/dirt have worked their way into the fitting. What I did was use liberal amounts of WD40 and a long bobby bin to work out the blockage. Once this was done it was a lot easier for the tool to push the spring loaded inner retainer clip apart. Once it is off and you are able to see the mechanics employed...you will understand how even a few grains of dirt can make this an #$%! job.
