Colum shifter problem!

Colum shifter problem!
Friday night, I went to the bank,put it in park, did my banking , put my foot on the brake, shifter come undone. It's stuck in park, the shifter flops between park and neutral without shifting the trans. Had to be towed back to my place,$60.00 OUCH! Finally got a chance to stop at the dealer down the street, got a diagram of the colum, what is the possible problem? My Chilton Manual SUCKS!
I know I gotta drop the colum, but how much dash do I need to undo before repair?

Dropped the column this morning, found the problem. there are 2 parts that shift the trans on the column, the top part was snapped in 2!
the shop that does the repairs for the company told @ $250.00 total cost.Not bad.
