My 2002 Ford Explorer with 127,000 miles on it shut off today. I have been hearing a rattling chain sound the past week and it got worse over the last day or so. Then when I accelerated, it would idle rough and then smooth out. While at a stand still today, the engine just shut off and won't start again. I was told it was possibly a timing chain or belt. Having it looked at right now. Does anybody know if this can damage the engine or is it just a chain or belt that needs replacing. The mechanic was able to start the engine manually but needs to look inside to find the source of the rattle. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks for the welcome. I hope someone will be able to help me and hopefully the engine isn't gone. Especially now before the holidays.
I did a little thinking and it does sound like the timing chain or belt..What ever they are using but I do not work on those engines I really do not want to misslead you..Someone will answer soon..Bump
Yeah, that's what it sounds like to me. All the symptoms are there. I'm just worried that if it is that if can damage the engine. Luckily I wasn't moving fast. I was almost at a stand still so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Although, a timing chain will be expensive it will be better then a new engine. Thanks for responding.
