Bought a 2004 F-250 Crew Cab Long Bed 6.0 Liter with 305's, 102,000 miles. Tow a 9000lb 5th Wheel when not commuting 25 miles each way....
Leaking oil, I am told from the front timing cover and the ICP sensor.
What kind of labor time am I looking at from a knowledgeable diesel repair shop?
Also, I see white smoke at start up, gone shortly thereafter...problem with my turbo??? Any harm from a little white smoke at first start???
Thanks in advance for any responses.
I've been reading and reading on the forums, trying to get caught up...this is my first diesel purchase, been around them, but never had the pleasure of owning one.
Can't help with the repair times, but a little white smoke at startup from time to time is not unusual. What kind of oil are you using? What about fuel quality? What's the weather like?
04 Engines were of two types 03 build and a 04 build .The Icp is either on the passanger side valve cover which would make the motor an 04 or it is under the turbo at the rear of the engine 03 build. If there appears to be any oil on the wires of the connector replace the pigtail with the sensor,it may cause running problems down the road. The 04 motor is a piece of cake to replace the 03 is the opposite.A little white smoke on a cold start is normal.
Just after the truck arrived I had a friend with a diesel fleet change the oil and trans fluid and did not get from him what kind of oil he used. I will find out on the next oil change for sure.
Fuel, I fill up with Diesel #2. Plain old Diesel, either from Chevron or Valero. Just bought motorcraft fuel additive to add to the next tank of gas.
I live in Clovis, Calfornia. Weather is cool now, getting to below freezing at night, but 60's in the day time. No real extremem temperatures here.
The diesel mechanic (who came highly recommended) said he was looking at 9 hours. Said my ICP sensor was down low in the back of the motor....must mean I have an 03 build....the plate on the upper passenger side of the motor indicates it is a 2004 International...I guess that doesn't mean much???
Just looked through my files and found where in 10/06 I paid $145.00 for my ICP sensor and $340 to have it installed. No time breakdown invoice, but it was done at my local Ford dealer. Hope this helps
Some trucks will smoke or run rough in cold weather with certain oil, which is why I asked. You can sometimes alleviate the problem by switching to lower viscosity or synthetic. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the smoke on startup for now unless it gets worse or continues for a long time after starting. The cetane booster may even clear it up.
There is a sticker on the FICM module under the degas bottle that will have your engine build date on it. Even though your truck is an '04 model, the engine was probably built in '03. Ford starts building the next year's models in August or maybe earlier.
3-4 hours @ $89/hour for the ICP Censor. Appears to be inline with what you paid.
4-5 hours for the timing cover pull and replace the gasket.
Total 9 hours plus parts. We'll see how close they get....
This is my first time with this shop, I was told they were honest and their guys grew up with diesels and knew the 6.0's. So far, so good. Electical trouble turned out to be loose battery cables...they could've stiffed me for new batteries...
They use OEM Ford/Motorcraft parts whenever possible.
