Hello, I was wondering what the difference between a 351 winds and a 351 clev, and how do i tell. do they bolt up to the same tranny? its a c 4 isnt it? just wondering. thanks alot.
Visually there are several things that are different including the intake and heads, but the biggest thing to note is that the 351C was never offered in full size trucks.
The quickest is to look at the waterneck/thermostat housing. The waterneck for a widsor block exits out of the front of the intake whereas the waterneck out of a cleveland exits out of the front of the block.
Then just to confuse you even more, there's the 351M & 400. Which are taller decked versions of the Cleveland but with a big block (429/460 bell housing pattern) These motors were installed in trucks from 77 to 82. They're identical externally too, only way to tell one from another is look at the crank or check the stroke. The 351M was a destroked 400.
Is the firing order the same on a 351W as a 351M? Reason I ask is I bought a stock replacement cam for my 351M and it is the same everywhere except the distributor drive gear is smaller diameter than my old one. The old one, the gear is about the same dia. as the front cam bearing. I think they sold me a 351W cam.
Well, to be honest, I got the cam installed and the intake back on before I discovered the problem. And I did compare the 2 cams (old & new) side-by-side before installation, I just did not notice the smaller distributor gear. Luckily I tried installing the distributor before I got the timing cover, etc. on. Very frustrating!
I did some research and found the parts store guy sold me a cam for a 351W instead of 351M. Got the right one today. Funny thing is the wrong one fit fine.
I had this happen before but the other way around the mechanic at a licenced shop put the wrong gear on the distributor the motor was a 351M and they installed a 351W gear believe it or not it ran for 2 days before it broke and dork-ed up the cam gear then I had to fight to get them to fix it because now it needed a cam ,lifters and all the rest of it
