I have a couple questions for you 335 series experts.....
(1) Is there and what difference between the 351c and the 351m?
(2) I am looking into a 51 f1 and the guy said it has a 351c with an fmx. How do I tell if it is a C or a M motor?
hey slmd...
the cleveland has a (2) or (4) at the
corner of the head, just above the valve
cover... if its not there, then its not a Cleveland..
although the 3 blocks seem the same by
size they are not.. the 400\351m are the same
block\heads only the stroke was changed.
the cleveland has different heads, and crank
rods\pistons...
Nice setup for the Cleveland,
if it is a Cleveland and has the (4) in the
head casting, then you got a real winner if
it has a (2) its still a great motor...
let me know how things are coming with your
project.
Best

The 351M and 351C have the same bore & stroke but since the 351M is based on the 400 block which is an inch taller than the C block the M pistons are much taller C pistons.
351M/400 heads are basically the same as 351C 2V heads but instead of a 2 in the corner they have an M or no markings at all.
The intake on the M is much wider than the C and sits an inch higher on the block. The easiest way to tell the difference is to look at whether or not the intake sits flush with the t-stat housing on the block or sits an inch higher.
Try to get a look at the casting numbers on the lower right side of the block near the starter. A 351C will have block casting numbers of D0xx or D2xx. The M will have casting numbers of D5xx, D7xx or D8xx. If it's a 400 that's been rebuilt as a 351M then it could also have casting # D1xx, D3xx or D4xx.
i don't think you can determine the block by the heads that are on it. any clevo 2V or 4V head as well as the M/400 heads will fit on any C, M, and 400 block. most likely undetectable switch would be the 2V C's on a M/400 block, or M/400 heads onto a C with a 2V intake. another way to tell which block you are looking at is by the mounts. the C will have 2 bolts holding the mounts to the block and an M/400 will have 3, i believe?
I was entertaining the idea of doing a new engine in the truck, and not knowing much about ford engines, i came to the conclusion that the 351m was a hard engine to modify. meaning, other than RV cam (never did determine what it was spec wise), couldn't find headers for the engine/chassis config, but did have the edelbrock performer intake.
what can be done to the 351m? what's interchangable with it?
i did want to keep the block, but came to a dead end as to do anything to it.
There are at least two or three brands of headers available for that vehicle/engine combination (in fact, more than for any other 351M/400 application).
Many 351C components are interchangeable with the 351M/400 engines.
grounded the 351m is a hard motor to modify but it can be done with a limited choice of aftermarket parts iam going through the process of building up my 78 351m now not much stuff to come by but what i can get for it will make it a hell of a motor. there is a slim to almost no choice for intakes. now cams and valve trains are a little better. rebuild kits you can get up to a .060 over i believe. so good luck man if i run across any parts ill let you know if you are going to go through with the build up. as well everyone here in the forum are very knowledgable.
Bubba, thanks a million times over. Now i know there can be a new better life for the boat anchor (an old say that pa used to say about his '81 econoline van engine).
I have taken the oppurtunity to print this out and be able to read this at leisure (an hour here/an hour there at campus don't provide much).
