Hello,I was was wondering if anyone else has had this problem with their F250 7.3 Diesel. The ignition swith gets hard to turn in cold weather. This morning it would turn hard but not engage the starter. Seems as if you need a pair of channel locks or something to turn it. I stopped trying for fear of breaking something. Thanks
Not sure if yours acted the same as mine, but I took a pair of channel locks and twisted off the switch, {didnt work} had it hauled home and replaced the Ig.switch. Later Rickk
You could try some spray lube/cleaner in the key cylinder hole.......not enough to drip all day. You can clean it with the cylinder in or out.... If this does not resolve the problem it could be a deeper......
To remove key cylinder
1 Disconnect battery ground....
2 Turn lock cylinder key to run position......
3 Place a 1/8 diameter pin (drill bit) in the shroud under lock cylinder.
Depress retaining pin while pulling out on lock cylinder to remove it from the column housing.
To install key cylinder
1 Instal lock cylinder by turning it to run position and depressing the retaining pin. Insert lock cylinder into lock cylinder housing. Make sure cylinder is fully seated and aligned in interlocking washer before turning key to off position. This will permit cylinder retianing pin to extend into cylinder housing hole.
2 Rotate lock cylinder, using lock cylinder key, to make sure of correct mechanical operation in all position.
2 Connect battery ground cable
Key switch became very stiff to turn on my `87F250. Turned out to be the ign. switch actuator starting to fail. Part only costs about $8.00 but takes about 3 hours to fit. It is a soft metal piece that joins the key switch to the rod that runs down the steering column to the ign./start switch. It is a common failure.
