Neutral safety switch question

I just tried searching and can't seem to get a handle on the neutral safety switch for my 1992 f150 4.9 with the mazda 5 speed manual...

I see some references to later models that have some kind of actuator on the master cylinder, but mine does not seem to have anything like that...just a master cylinder.

I've been up under the dash and can't see anything that looks like a switch that would be actuated by the pedal...

So the question is...where the heck is the neutral safety switch and how does it work on a 92 like mine???

Thanks.

On my 95 the switch is located under the dash where the clutch linkage rod connects to the hydraulic clutch master cylinder. Had it go out once and had to pull the connector and short across with a paper clip to get it started. Don't know if your 92 has the same setup or not - maybe this will help.

Yeah, I've seen reference to some actuator rod by the master cylinder, but I don't see it on my 92...and up under the dash, I can't see anything up in the pedal linkage that looks like it would be some kind of switch...

Anybody else with a 92 or nearabouts know how mine works???

I also have a 92 f150 300-6 5spd manual . . . Its got a bypass rigged up because the NSS is bad - turn the key, flip the switch to turn the starter and once it catches turn it back off and go on my merry way. I'm not the one that rigged this up (my hubby, back when he was able bodied rigged this up in his employers parking lot so he could get home and we just never got around to making things right). We took the f150 off the road for the winter as hubby doesn't drive anymore and we just don't NEED three vehicles for one driver and the whole front of the truck is burried under the snow bank. I'll check back later today and if you still don't have an answer I'll shovel out the truck and follow the wires and see if I can at least tell you where ours is under the assumption that yours would be in the same place.

Thanks for the replies gang...pekkah: don't put yourself out that much! Stay out of the snow! Shoot, if I'm still having this problem in the spring, you can check then...thanks though...

I'm gonna wedge myself back up under the dash and try look again...honestly, I didn't see anything before...maybe I'll take a run over to ford and ask to look at a parts diagram...hey, that might just work...

If you look under the dash at the clutch pedal you'll see a rod from the pedal to the clutch master cylinder. The clutch safety switch is mounted/snapped over the rod. When you press on the clutch pedal the rod moves along with the clutch safety switch. The switch eventually hits the firewall and as the pedal is pressed some contacts in the safety switch are made allowing the starter to operate.

Ford had firewall cracking problems with trucks up to the early 90 models.

The clutch master cylinder would pull away from the firewall when you engaged the clutch pedal. This caused the clutch safety switch to not engage. Have someone press on the clutch pedal. Look under the hood at the clutch master cylinder and see if it is pulling away from the firewall.

Ford had a bracket you could install to correct the problem.

Thanks xlt! I think I finally got it. I was thinking this rod they were talking about was something separate from the actual rod that drives the plunger in the master cylinder...

Your decription fits perfect with what I got at ford today...I got a look at the parts diagram there and the parts guy showed me how the switch goes over the rod and has that cover that snaps back on and such...

How's this...ford wants $116 for this switch!!! I'm hoping it isn't a dealer only item...I'll be checking the local parts places to see if I can't find something about half that price...

Thanks fellas!

http://www.partsamerica.com shows they stock a replacement switch for $60.00
Search for clutch start switch.

Here's the schematic of the clutch start switch for an 88. Maybe the color of the wires are the same as for a 92.

"M" is a Red/Light Blue wire which is 12 volts from the ignition switch when in the Start position.

12 volts goes thru the switch when the clutch pedal is engaged and comes out of the switch on the Red/Light Blue wire "N"
12 volts is then applied to the Starter Relay. The Starter Relay closes and 12 volts is applied to the starter motor.

12 volts also comes out of the Gray/Yellow wire and goes to the ECM.

OK, finally got the time to get this taken care of...the switch looks just like the pic posted by f150xlt above (thanks, f150!). I found one at NAPA for $60(they called it a clutch safety switch)...

Turns out I was having a hard time because I just didn't get that the rod that goes to the clutch master cylinder was not directly at the top of the clutch pedal somewhere...it took me a couple times going in and out of the truck, looking at the firewall on the engine side and being up under the dash to figure out that...(drum roll, please)

the rod that goes to the clutch master cylinder is not at the top of the clutch pedal lever, but across the way back closer to the gas pedal via a linkage...

the moment I saw that, there was the switch...had a little trouble getting the old one loose from the little snap that holds it to the firewall, but after that, bing, bang...it was done.

Started like a champ! Yeah!!!

Thanks all...hope my documented fumblings help somebody later...aloha!
