How to replace rear bearings

How can I tell which bearing is bad on my 2003 4X2 Explorer. I have read all the other threads and am pretty sure ther is a bad bearing. Don't know which one.

I could pretty much tell by the sound my right rear bearing was bad. To confirm I grabbed the top of the tire (sitting on the ground) and pushed and pulled very hard. I could feel the play in the bearing on the bad side, the good side had no play. Unfortunately you can not see the bearing, so no visual evidence.

I know this is not much help. I wasn't real sure when I took mine off, but I figured I couldn't wait for it to completely fail and screw up something else.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like the left rear wheel. I jacked it up and there is no play in either wheel.

normally you can run 5-10,000 miles with a small spall spot on the outer race that will make quite a noise, but no clearance when shaking. i always jack it up, take the tires and brake pads off, then rotate each wheel several times and compare.. sometimes its still a good guess, hard to tell when setting on jacks.

If a bearing went bad, could you damage the rear differential? I had a friend take his Explorer to a shop after hearing a grinding noise coming from the rear tire and the mechanic told him that his bearing went bad and so did his rear differential.

I suspected the left in mine. Had the wife drive & I climbed in the back & put my ear to the floor. Turns out the left one was the worst but both were bad.
