I had my 2002 7.3 serviced at the ford dealership . Drained the coolant and transmission as required for warrenty. When I picked it up, I asked how much additive to the coolant they had added. I was told with today's antifreeze it was no longer needed. First I had ever heard about it. Anybody else hear this news? I am very uncomfortable with this and will probably add some just for peace of mind.
What Rich said. You could also walk out and look what color coolant you have in the reservoir. The old green coolant requires an additive, but my 02 came with the new stuff. I just change coolant every 100,000. No additives needed.
Sorry, I type too slow. I'd make a return trip to the dealer and have them run one of those test strips in the coolant. I don't know if the additive is required when the green coolant is changed, or just as it gets older.
Green requires it, Gold does not. Why they told you the green doesn't is another matter. I'd do exactly what Chris said and make them test it for the proper SCA level. A few days without it won't hurt anything, but definitely get it done...
What is RMI-25 i seen it on dieselsite and can it be used in the green coolent,i have a few gallons laying around and woluld like to change my coolent. Thanks
I called the dealership and talked to the service foreman, he said oh yeah you need additive.lol I went to Navistar and bought some additive and some strips. I will check it out tomorow and see if the mechanic added some additive like he should have.
Good catch on your part. Unfortunately you can only trust some mechanics to do what the computer tells them. And if they think they know what they're doing and don't look at the computer they can get completely lost.
Just FYI, last time I was at my dealer on patrol, the diesel tech told me they do not check squat. They just pour the additive in at the interval. You cannot even buy the test strips anymore. If the interval has arrived, they change the coolant. That is it.

Afterall, it's *just* us paltry 7.3 owners. It's funny how little they care about you if you haven't bought something from them in the last couple years. Just another reason on a long list of why I do 99% of my own maint...
