Well, today I dressed up like the Michelin man to work I my unheated garage on my 48 F-7. Temps were around 15 or 20 with 6-10 inches of snow outside. Been working on the fuel/vacume pump forever. I was missing the pushrod for the fuel/vacume pump. After a year plus, I finally bought a parts truck that had the original 337 flathead and pushrod (and a few other parts). I soon realized why there was no pushrod installed. The diaphrams in the pump were shot. The vacume side was sucking oil up and out of the engine.
First to find a rebuilt one and wait for shipping. Second, to buy a rebuilt kit for the one I took off the truck and wait for shipping. The one I bought was the incorrect year for my truck.
I installed the pump I rebuilt and waited 4-5 days for the gasket sealer to cure. It takes a while when its 20-30 degrees out. Anyway, today I fired up the truck to check the operation of the pump. Well, it doesn't seem like it is working. In addition to the pump not working, I noticed that the right water pump is leaking coolant at the pulley. Not a good day. I may just wait for spring to work on it. Replacing the water pump is going to take a while. The water pump is also the front motor mount. And, if I rebuild one pump, I may as well rebuild both.
Sorry for the long post - had to vent. Next time it snows, I will be sure to bring lots of tequilla and mararita mix.
and welcome to the world of old trucks !!!! every one knows it will never give you any greif as long as it is warm outside , but let it turn cold and bam all that can go wrong will !!!! the heater in my 53 worked like a charm all summer long , couldn't get it to shut off no matter what . geuss what ain't workin now ? gotta love 'em !!!!!!
i feel yer pain dealing with this weather, every winter i seem to real lose a couple of months time working on my vehicles. i get psyched and deal with the weather for a couple of hours than come in to thaw out than round 2 than repeat. makes you understand why folks go south this time of year.
far as the truck goes, gotta love 'em. i haven't had the pleasure of tinkering with either my fuel pump or water pumps. yet! hang in there.

Let me add, not only will something will not work when it's warm enough to work on it, but something will diffenately good wrong five minutes before you are about to leave to go to the local car show or cruise, especially if it's on a Sunday when no one who has the slightest chance of carring the part you need is open. Usually the part you need isn't carried by anyone local anyways.
Also, I would like to add, the part has a better chance of failing on the way to an event if you're in your Sunday best. Also, it'll be on some muddy softshoulder on a country road the day after a heavy rain.

Old trucks, you gotta love 'em
Dang, that's messed up. Now I think I am glad my truck is incomplete, and gracing the driveway (I call it gracing, the neighbors call it cluttering up). Good ol' trucks, gotta love 'em.
are you sure you're ready for this ?????????????? by the bye is them there 336's got any more grunt than my 239's . been kinda keeping a look out figured it'd make a cool one to stick in sumpthin seeing as i cant locate a cheap { hah hah right !! } lincoln v-12 flatty .
You don't want to get involved with a 337. They are almost identical to the Lincoln V8 but are build for pulling power, not speed. If you think getting parks for a 239 is expensive try finding parts for a 337, even parts for the more plentiful, by not much, Lincoln engine are astronomical.
your opinion is good enough for me !!!!!!!!!!! i,ve kinda fallin in love with these ol' girls , the flatties ya know !!! i'm trying to convince the wife that the only way her pt loozer would ever be cool is if she'd let me back half it and put a flatty in it ............ no luck !!
naw the motor would be more pricey than the car !! i just like givin her greif over the turd and she was present when i typed the last response . i wouldn't waste a good flat head on that thing !
