I just bought a 2001 f150 super crew 145k miles...mint condition...however my check engine light has come on twice...with about 75 miles between each.
The truck runs and drives fine, no knocks, pings, pongs, clunks, misses, nothing. no signs for me to follow.
Any Ideas?
I checked the MAF, not sure if it was clean or dirty...more than likely dirty...
The truck came with a K&N air filter in it so I think it might have oil on the sensor???
My only other guess was the o2 sensors....but im pretty ignorant as to what goes on down there.
Im trying not to go spend a few bucks at the ford dealer just to read a code. just for it turn up with a dirty MAF or a faulty sensor. This is my first modern ford to own... so if any of you guys have had the same issues. let me know how you fixed it and what the prob was.. Thanks!
Just went to autozone and had them do a obdII check...
It came up with a PO430 code.
Catalyst system efficiency for bank 2 is below threshold for the
engine operating conditions.
Catalyst efficiency codes are usually not due to O2 sensors as the sensors are well tested for proper operation before running the efficiency monitor program.
HMM, most that I have had that had this code, had a 0.00v reading on the scanner.
I guess scanning it with a live data scanner would verify this.
A [i]graphing[/1] scan tool definitely will show a dead (inactive) cat in a heartbeat. Both the upstream and downstream O2 sensors (per bank) will be switching in near unison indicating that the cat is not working.

Probably a dead/dying cat.

I agree. It is a good idea to replace the 02 sensors when replacing converter though, IMO. Problem is most likely the cat though.
